Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Chapter one sets the stage for this interactive survival adventure about life as a member of a U.S. Special Forces unit, and from there readers must choose from three very different story paths. One scenario puts the reader at the lead of a Green Beret unit tasked with rescuing five U.S. diplomats who have been taken hostage by a dozen well-armed terrorists holed up in a heavily defended compound. Another story has the reader in the role of an Army Ranger platoon leader who has been dropped by helicopter deep inside enemy territory to capture an airstrip surrounded by at least 100 soldiers armed with heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and anti-aircraft missiles. The third vignette engages the reader to imagine being a U.S. Navy SEAL who has been sent on a top secret, highly dangerous mission to capture a terrorist leader in his cliff-side mansion. Each scenario offers a choice: air strike or invasion, sniper attack or hanger assault, crash the gate or sneak over the fence? Each answer leads to different consequences and still more choices. A few end well, but most lead to something less than mission success. The well-written text is engaging without being overwhelming. The stories portray the life-and-death challenges faced by U.S. Special Forces units. Actual photos of soldiers and input from retired U.S. Air Force historian Raymond Puffer ensure the accuracy of this text, one of eight in the "Can You Survive" series. The book includes a timeline, examples of real missions, a list of related Internet sites, a glossary, a bibliography, and a basic index. While engaging, the plethora of choices can be confusing. Backtracking through the decisions to reach the last point of departure can be bothersome. This, however, is a small price to pay for an otherwise highly accessible text sure to please adventure junkies. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
