Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
At the start of a popular traveling Titanic artifacts exhibit, patrons receive a postcard-sized boarding pass of an actual passenger, with details of their age and itinerary. At the end of the tour, patrons can view a memorial wall to discover whether their passenger survived the ship's fateful first voyage. This book is a bit like that. Chapter one sets the scene, giving a few details about the ship and its trip before offering the reader three story paths. Will you be a crew member, the surgeon's assistant? A governess with a family traveling first-class? A 12-year-old boy on a journey with his father? From there, readers continue to make decisions that culminate in an ultimately life-or-death ending in this "interactive survival adventure." The book promises forty-one choices and twenty endings, and each one is captivating and thought-provoking, drawing readers into the desperation and luck of the Titanic's tragic accident. A final chapter entitled "Why Did Some Survive?" explores some of the factors that contributed to survival—or death. For example, the ship's officer on one side of the boat was more lenient about allowing boys into the lifeboat than the officer on the other. A page of "Real Survivors" provides four short biographies that give a real-life account to this fictional adventure. A three-question "survival quiz" and lists of related books and web sites support curious readers in finding out more. Also includes a glossary and an index. The high price of this volume makes it a poor value for personal collections, but librarians who take advantage of the publisher's school/library discount (or purchase the volume with others in the "You Choose: Survival" series) are likely to find this book to be very popular with their adventure-loving patrons.
