Children's Literature - Judy Chernak
An award-winning author well-known in Europe debuts in English with this poignant tale of a boy who adopts a grandfather from an old people's home and instructs him in how to fill this role, modeled after the real grandfather of his best friend. Uffe's friend Berra is rather terrified of claiming a total stranger, and the chosen stranger is no less amazed at the unfolding of events. But both rise to the unusual scenario and quickly develop a deep friendship, complete with forbidden adventures, a cantankerous neighbor, demand for payoffs, and the sweet reward of mutual affection. The illustrations by the award-winning artist are done as caricatures--truly ugly but somehow endearing--and the opening page sets the tone of this bittersweet story as the two boys seesaw on a plank over a discarded pipe, in a flower-filled field with an oil refinery in the background and a jagged-edged tin can in the foreground.
