Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Full of neat fact bites, and suitable for elementary school social studies, this ABC book covers a multitude of subjects relevant to Canada, from the Arctic Ocean to Zinc. Many entries are simple yet informative. For example, "B is for beaver...a Canadian national symbol. Europeans came to Canada in search of valuable furs long before Canada was its own country. Beaver furs, or pelts, were worth the most and could even be used as money!" While "C for Comedians" mentions famous contemporary Canadians who kids might know, including Mike Meyers, Jim Carrey and Michael J. Fox. A map and greeting in Canada's two official languages start the book; quick statistics, a glossary and a few French expressions supply additional information at the end. Colorful line drawings tie together most of the alphabet pages. As with other books in this series, this one skips among subjects and time periods, from sport to geography to Canada's cities, politics and natural resources, without any apparent cohesive plan, aside from plunging forward through the alphabet. Nevertheless, the information on each page is substantive and diverse and sure to appeal to young researchers. 2004, Picture Window Books, Ages 5 to 11.

Gr 2-4-These titles contain well-chosen details that go beyond what might be found in encyclopedia entries or typical country books. For example, the first book includes Canadian comedians and currency (loonie); New Zealand offers an alternate name for the country-Godzone, short for "God's Own Country." The factual approach in the writing makes it user-friendly for young researchers. A synopsis of important facts is appended. The digitally prepared illustrations, although colorful and bright, are too primitive and "sketchy" for books of this nature, and provide little information. Child appeal is limited, although the many unique facts will make these titles useful tools for independent research projects.-Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
