VOYA
It is a safe bet to wager that all middle and high school students are required to complete a country assignment at some point in their academic careers. The books in the "Visual Geography" series will be appreciated both by the anxious student whose assignment is due tomorrow and by those looking for more detailed historical and cultural information. In addition to the requisite topography, history, government, cultural, and economic information, there are detailed time lines, short biographies of famous people, lists of sights to see, and simple recipes included in these books. Complementing the easy-to-read text is a variety of relatively recent color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations. Canada in Pictures does a nice job of highlighting Canadian pop culture figures such as Margaret Atwood, Alanis Morissette, and Joni Mitchell. It even includes information about the 2002 figure-skating gold medal controversy involving Russian and Canadian skaters. These books will be extremely useful for students completing country assignments or for those just interested in learning about a new place. The inviting photographs might even attract a casual browser. Students in a hurry will value the clear arrangement of important information. It should be noted that the publisher maintains a Web site to accompany the series at http://www.vgs.com. The series is recommended for middle school, high school, and public libraries. Glossary. Gr 5-9-An excellent introduction to the country's geography, history, people, government, and economy. Carried forward from the first edition (1989) are the easy-to-read and informative text, maps, charts, and full-color photographs. The revision offers current data, as well as updated back matter, including an annotated reading list and Web sites, as well as lists of famous Canadians and Canadian tourist attractions. Braun goes beyond the simple retelling of facts by providing readers with insights into such issues as the French/English conflict, antagonism between provinces, and the struggles Canada faces to remain distinct from its more populous American neighbor. The inclusion of this type of information sets this book apart from other titles, such as the Canadian entries in Bobbie Kalman's "The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series (Crabtree, 2001). Braun's attractive volume will appeal to report writers and leisure readers alike.-Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
