Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Nonfiction series, especially those about countries or regions of the world are very popular with publishers. The features needed in order for those series to be attractive to teachers and librarians include accurate information, added features such as maps and statistics about the subject, and high quality illustrations. While the illustrations are great and there are nice added features, this volume in the "Countries Around the World" series offers an extremely superficial overview of the nation of Canada. The chapter headings include history, resources, wildlife, infrastructure (which includes leaders, health, and schools), culture and a look at the current situation. The brevity of the text (forty-eight pages), requires that the history of the nation, from early inhabitants to the present be condensed into thirteen paragraphs. While one presumes that the information presented, however briefly, is accurate, there are no sources listed, so it could easily be completely wrong. The added features include sidebars that highlight individuals, languages, and a recipe. There are numerous appendices including a fact file, a selective list of famous Canadians, the words to the national anthem, a list of national holidays, a timeline, a glossary, a short bibliography including websites, a reproducible map and flag, and an index. The fact file includes information such as life expectancy, religious affiliation as a percentage of the population and birth rate. Since none of these facts is common knowledge, there should be a source listed. Teachers and librarians would be better served by subscribing to a good quality magazine such as National Geographic for less than the cost of a single volume of this series. I cannot recommend even the more moderately priced paper edition because of the superficiality. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
