Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Cancer is prevalent in the United States today. It knows no enemies and has no favorites. It affects everyone, whether you have had it or you know someone who has. How does someone deal with cancer? Read the incredible stories of Amanda, David, and Michael who were normal healthy teenagers until one day they were diagnosed with cancer. Follow along with Angie who tries to encourage her dad through his fight with cancer. This informative book will explore the causes of cancer, the treatments, and how to be tested for cancer. Some cancers are curable, others are not. Some can be best treated with chemotherapy, while others are treated with radiation or immunotherapy. Current endeavors to fight cancer as well as future ones are discussed. Genetics research is being done and cancer vaccines are being experimented with. Drugs are being created. The science and medical fields are searching for ways to treat as well as cure the disease that affects more than 1.3 million people yearly in the United States. This book is enlightening as well as educational. It would be a good source of information for those who are struggling with cancer or have a loved one with this disease. It would also be a good book to use in a science or biology class. This book is part of the "Twenty-First Century Medical Library" series. 2006, Twenty-First Century Books/Lerner Publishing Group, Ages 12 to 18.

Gr 8 Up-This is not just another revision of the Silversteins' Cancer: Can It Be Stopped? (HarperCollins, 1987). It is a study of the most recent clinical trials and the newest developments and ongoing research in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Each chapter begins with a case study about a patient and then proceeds into the chapter topic. The use of marijuana and the debate about legalizing it for medicinal purposes is discussed, as is the use of thalidomide. Data and acronyms abound, although the statistics have to be taken at face value as there are no source notes. Black-and-white photographs, with an occasional table of facts, are included. Some photographs are very similar to those in the earlier book. An extensive glossary, a list of resources and organizations, and a good index are included. The writing is more sophisticated than in the previous edition and it's dry, but it will interest readers who want to learn everything they can about the current medical state of cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment. Kirsten Lamb's Cancer (Raintree, 2002) is for less-capable readers but has full-color illustrations, numerous text boxes, bulleted lists, and graphs and charts.-Marilyn Fairbanks, Azure IRC, Brockton High School, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
