School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-10-- A book that is based on Cancer (Watts, 1980; o.p.) by Gail K. Haines. Following the same organization, Herda's rewriting is more explanatory and clinical, and she has added information about prevention and advice for those who know someone with cancer. This volume is illustrated with black- and-white diagrams and photographs, and uses different typefacesand subject headings in the chapters. The diagrams are informative and clearly labeled, while the photos of cells, many times enlarged, are dark, fuzzy, and hard to see. There are also photos of patients undergoing therapy and of the doctors who treat them. While this is a good introduction to the subject, the Silversteins' Cancer: Can it be Stopped? (Lippincott, 1987) discusses the progress of the disease, its diagnosis, and its treatments more comprehensively. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY
