Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
NOTE: This review was written to encompass six titles—Cancer, Cults, Ethnic Violence, Serial Killers, Teen Smoking, and War Crimes. These anthologies provide a variety of articles focusing on current social issues, "edited for clarity," as Greenhaven states. War Crimes, for example, begins with an introduction that outlines some of the history and controversies surrounding this topic, and then presents from three to seven articles each (of about three to twelve pages each) on various aspects: chapter headings are "An Examination of War Crimes," "War Crimes: A Historical Overview," "Personal Reflections on War Crimes," and "How Should War Crimes Be Addressed?" The authors, mostly journalists and professors, look at everything from rape as a war crime to the Holocaust, Vietnam, the Japanese occupation of China, and Rwanda, to deterrents and appropriate punishment. Articles are prefaced by brief summaries; an appendix includes the text of the Nuremberg Principles and the Geneva Convention treaties; and there is an annotated list of organizations to contact. The other volumes are similarly organized. Students studying current issues will find these titles a valuable resource. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2000, Greenhaven, 190p, 24cm, bibliog, index, $13.96. Ages 16 to adult. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick; May 2000 (Vol. 34 No. 3)

Gr 6-10-- The discovery that potentially cancer-causing genes are present in normal, healthy cells has, in effect, redefined much of the thinking on the causes and treatment of the disease, and is the focus of this book. Yount describes the nature and types of cancer and the roles of genetic mutation and carcinogens as cancer initiators and promotors. The various types of carcinogens are outlined in sufficient detail, along with ethical arguments regarding acceptable risk. Treatments are explained, including information on current research. The author also presents the views of several research scientists on the future of cancer treatment. She writes in a clear, natural style, striking a good balance between basic information and notes of interest. Page composition is appealing, incorporating lots of white space and small black-and-white photos with full-page photographs introducing each chapter. An up-to-date bibliography that includes periodical citations is appended. Informative and thought-provoking, this book should replace the vintage 1970s titles found on so many shelves, and it updates the Silversteins' Cancer: Can It be Stopped? (Lippincott, 1987). --Denise L. Moll, Lone Pine Elementary School, West Bloomfield, MI

Gr 6-8-Beginning with a description of early cancer treatments (lye, arsenic, and medicine made from ground-up toads), Yount presents a clear yet concise explanation of how cancer cells develop and the different types of the disease. While offering information on the possible carcinogenic effects of food additives, smoking, pesticides, and even electromagnetic fields, she explains difficult concepts in simple terms. Diagnostic techniques and traditional and alternative treatment options are presented including chemotherapy, radiation, gene therapy, biofeedback, and reflexology. The illustrations hover between decorative and informative, consisting mostly of black-and-white photos of patients in different clinical settings. The book concludes with a list of organizations to contact for further information. An objective overview.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
