Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Theresa M. Yannaco, RN, MS, AOCN (Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center)
Description: This fourth edition of Cancer Nursing marks the tenth anniversary of the first edition of this text. As in each of the previous editions, the fourth edition provides a broad scope and wealth of information for the neophyte in cancer nursing as well as the experienced advanced oncology nursing practitioner, educator, administrator, and researcher. Once again, the team of editors has brought together a talented and distinguished group of oncology professionals to create one of the most outstanding and comprehensive oncology nursing reference texts available today.
Purpose: The overall purpose of this text is to provide the reader with the most current and comprehensive oncology nursing text available, complete with the needed scientific and theoretical base as well as the practical information needed for clinical oncology nursing practice, education, administration, and research. The information provided in this text offers the oncology nursing clinician the unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer. In addition, this text provides the oncology nursing practitioner the needed information to meet the challenges of the future in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
Audience: Although targeted specifically for the oncology nurse, this text, because of its comprehensive presentation of the current scientific findings in cancer care, is an excellent resource for all healthcare professionals caring for the patient with a diagnosis of cancer.
Features: The book has 66 chapters organized into eight parts. Each chapter begins with a concise topical outline and concludes with a current and comprehensive bibliography. The illustrations used throughout the text highlight key concepts and clarify some of the more advanced concepts presented. There are a few new chapters in this edition that are noteworthy: "Cultural Diversity Among Individuals With Cancer," "Policy, Politics, and Oncology Nursing," and "Role of the Advanced Practice Oncology Nurse." Each reflects the knowledge that has emerged since the printing of the previous editions and once again demonstrates the editorial team's commitment to publishing one the most comprehensive oncology texts available. As the editors note in their preface to the fourth edition, readers have previously referred to the past editions of this text as the "bible" for their practice. This edition continues the traditions of the past and once again deserves the designation as the "bible" for current oncology nursing practice, administration, education, and research.
Assessment: The fourth edition of this text is a highly recommended comprehensive reference book for the neophyte, advanced practice oncology nurse, and other healthcare professionals who care for the patient with a diagnosis of cancer. In addition, this text is a recommended addition to the library not only of the individual practitioner, but also for health science libraries and health care institutions who are providing care to the patient with a diagnosis of cancer.
