Overview

Book 1 in the Refiner's Fire series. The daughter of a wealthy slave-holding family from Richmond, Virginia, Caroline Fletcher is raised in a culture that believes slavery is God-ordained and biblically acceptable. But upon awakening to the cruelty and injustice it encompasses, Caroline's eyes are opened for the first time to the men and women who have cared tirelessly for her. Her journey of maturity and faith will draw her into the abolitionist movement, where she is confronted with the risks and sacrifices her beliefs entail.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
From the time she was 12, Caroline Fletcher, daughter of a wealthy Richmond, VA, slave-holding family, knew she was different, for she knew that the household slaves were human beings, not mere property. When her mother commits suicide, Caroline is sent first to the Fletcher plantation and then to relatives in Philadelphia. Three years later, as the nation teeters on the brink of civil war, her father brings her home. Caroline is now a determined abolitionist, and she struggles to live in a culture where people believe that slavery is ordained by God. With her fianc , father, and cousin off fighting in the war, Caroline embarks on a dangerous path of spying and intrigue that tests her faith and demands risk and sacrifice. Unfortunately, Caroline is the only fully developed character in this work, and the African American characters are all too good to be true; despite these flaws, Austin (Hidden Places; Eve's Daughters; Wings of Refuge) has written a thoroughly engrossing and exciting tale that will appeal to fans of Virginia Gaffney's "Richmond Chronicles" and historical romances. Purchase where historical novels and Austin's other books are in demand. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Beautiful

I could not put this book down! The period detail is great and it is really refreashing to see a strong southern belle who actaully stands up for what she believes, instead of just saying how evil slavery was. Pampered southern belle Caroline Flecther comes to question the insitution of slavery after witnessing her childhood playmate being sold away. When her mother dies Caroline goes to live with her aunt in Philadelphia, while there she becomes an ardent abolotionist and returns home to Richmond determined to single handly to freeing the slaves by showing those around her the evil of slavery. While on her mission to end slavery she meets Charles St. John and the couple fall in love on the eve of the Civil War. But Caroline is torn between her love for the South and her family and her commitment to freeing the slaves. The Christian undertones of the book are well done and very realistic, this was a time when people talked about their faith very openly.

    wonderful to read

I really enjoyes reading this trilogy. The author is very discriptive and pulls you right into the story. The three books are about the war between the south and north. Each book is from a different perspective and viewpoint. The first from a eoman of the south, the second from a wealthy family in the north and the third from the slaves point of view. Great historical references.

    more from this reviewer

    Excellent, highly recommended

I have read many civil war novels but never one like this. The main character lived in the South but was empathetic to freeing the slaves. She was not only in emotional turmoil but also involved in some frightening situations as she strove to be true to her convictions. She leaned on her faith to get her through. I loved this book!! Another excellent book by Lynn Austin. Also one to cause some very lively discussions in a book club.

    Couldn't Put it Down!!

I absolutely love Lynn Austin's writing in this series. I had previously read the final two books in this series and just purchased this one. It completed the story beautifully.

I found the characters to be wonderfully developed making it so easy to get lost in this story, I literally couldn't put this book down until I was finished.

I did not grow up in America so know very little about the civil war, I felt that this series was a great introduction to me and will allow me to talk with my own children about the issues surrounding that time period when they are learning about it at school.

I know that Lynn Austin takes a lot of care to make sure that her facts are historically correct which gives me confidence as I read knowing that I'm not being led astray by a good tale.

I love the way the story is told from the perspective of each party to the war. Very insightful and compelling.
