I love historical fiction, and this book is one of the best. This is the second Lynn Austin book Ive read. I wasnt disapointed. Not only did I get a difrent prespective of a war Ive studied some, but I also got a Biblical prespective on the war and in life. It really made me think. The Biblical comparitives were new to me. Give this book a try, but I will warn you, you might have trouble putting it down.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I've always been a fan of historical fiction, especially stories set during the American Civil War era. This is one of the better stories I have read. Not only does it tell the tale of several lives affected by this historical conflict, it helps the reader examine his/her own personal values and spirituality. I would like to thank Lynn Austin for helping me examine my own spirituality and values as I learned a lot about tolerance and forgiveness through the characters portrayed in the book. If anything, this story gives me hope that good can be found even in the darkest of times.

I could not put this down and had to purchase the next two in the series. If you have any interest in historical fiction or the civil war, this and the following two books give you a unique perspective of how the war affected different people differently. This series is one of the best I have read in a long time.

You will be on the edge of your seat while reading this book. It takes you through a series of events filled with twists and turns that you would never have guessed. After reading this book, you will want to read the other two in the series.

I could not put this book down! The period detail is great and it is really refreashing to see a strong southern belle who actaully stands up for what she believes, instead of just saying how evil slavery was. Pampered southern belle Caroline Flecther comes to question the insitution of slavery after witnessing her childhood playmate being sold away. When her mother dies Caroline goes to live with her aunt in Philadelphia, while there she becomes an ardent abolotionist and returns home to Richmond determined to single handly to freeing the slaves by showing those around her the evil of slavery. While on her mission to end slavery she meets Charles St. John and the couple fall in love on the eve of the Civil War. But Caroline is torn between her love for the South and her family and her commitment to freeing the slaves. The Christian undertones of the book are well done and very realistic, this was a time when people talked about their faith very openly.

Very good book, could not put it down once I started it. It has such wonderful detail about life in the south in the civil war era. I especially loved the heroine, Caroline. I wish I could rewind time and read it for the first time again!

Lynn Austin is a talented writer bringing her characters to life and telling a compelling story one is hard pressed to put down. However, I could use a little less of the repetitive religious dogma. But I am actually surprised at the content considering it is Bethany Publishers. I would have thought her work wouldn't be approved by this ultra conservative religious publishing house.

Reslly enjoy this author. Read her Chronicles of the Kings books, and thought I'd try this series. Not disappointed and can't wait to finish the other two books, then start her stand alone books. Great story!!!

I absolutely love Lynn Austin's writing in this series. I had previously read the final two books in this series and just purchased this one. It completed the story beautifully.
I found the characters to be wonderfully developed making it so easy to get lost in this story, I literally couldn't put this book down until I was finished.
I did not grow up in America so know very little about the civil war, I felt that this series was a great introduction to me and will allow me to talk with my own children about the issues surrounding that time period when they are learning about it at school.
I know that Lynn Austin takes a lot of care to make sure that her facts are historically correct which gives me confidence as I read knowing that I'm not being led astray by a good tale.
I love the way the story is told from the perspective of each party to the war. Very insightful and compelling.

I THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN. THought provoking. I never considered the fact that both sides thought they were justified in God's eyes. I thought this would be mediochre because it was free, but it was a great read.

I enjoyed this book immensely because of my interest in the period of American life during the civil war. But I also feel it was very well written. I enjoyed it to the end.

I've read a lot of historical fiction and this book was one of my favorites. The characters were well developed and the plot moved along easily. Many books about the Civil War will give the reader what happened from the soldier's perspective. While Lynn Austin gives us some of that, we see mostly how life was for the women and the slaves who were left 'back home'. I can't wait to read the next books in the series.
