Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Four fifth-graders are recruited by a scheming magician in this hefty bonbon from the author of the Fablehaven tales. At first, Nate, Summer, Trevor and Pigeon think they have it good. Having asked them to help her recover a hidden treasure that (she says) belongs to her, Belinda White, friendly proprietor of a sweets shop that has just opened in their small town, provides some uncommon candies-like Moon Rocks, that give them the ability to jump like grasshoppers, and literally electrifying Shock Bits. When she begins asking them to commit certain burglaries, though, their exhilaration turns to unease, and rightly so; Mrs. White is actually after a draft from the Fountain of Youth that will make her the world's most powerful magician. And, as it turns out, she isn't the only magician who's come to town-not even the only one whose magic is tied to sweets. Filling out the supporting cast with the requisite trio of bullies, plus magical minions of various (and sometimes gross) abilities, Mull trots his twist-laden plot forward to a well set-up climax. Leaving the door open an inch for sequels, he dishes up a crowd-pleaser as delicious-if not so weird-as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . (Fantasy. 10-13)

Brandon Mull
Brandon Mull
Brandon Mull published his first book Fablehaven in the summer of 2006. His publisher, Shadow Mountain, rejected a manuscript he submitted in 2005 that was geared towards adults. But the editors liked his writing style and asked him to try and create a story for a younger audience. He already had the idea for Fablehaven and wrote the book during the next five months on nights and weekends while still working his day job writing marketing copy for a movie company.

    I Also Recommend:

    How can you go wrong?

This book has magic. And It has candy. In fact it has MAGIC CANDY.
Um...do I need to keep going?
Because when I was a kid, I would've been all over that!!!!

I can also add that I adored this book and devoured it in one sitting.
My only warning? It makes you need to eat candy.
    Not want.
    NEED!
And...well...it's a little disappointing that your candy doesn't make you fly or invincible.
*grumbles about the need for magic Twizzlers*

I read a LOT of MG, and this is one of my favorites. And when I was a kid, I would have loved it even more. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun read. :)

    A good book

This is not your practical magic type candy you read about in Willy Wonka. This is about a modern story of the Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull. There is magic candy that can blow your mind make you weightless, unbreakable and bulletproof. These are the exciting adventures in The Candy Shop War.
In the beginning of The Candy Shop War, there are four kids named Nate, Summer, Trevor and Pigeon. They leave their school Mt. Diablo Elementary and go to a new candy shop down the street called Sweet Tooth Ice Cream Candy Shoppe. All four of them walk into the Shoppe and meet this old lady named Miss. White. They ask if there are any free samples, she says no," but if you want some can you help me clean the shop and set up for a week". Nate and Summer are in charge of the windows, Pigeon was in charge of the floor; and Trevor is in charge of the tables and chairs. Every sweat that came off their body for the weak was all worth it. Miss. White gives them the special candy and says," go somewhere open where no one would see and do not chew them". The four kids go to a secret hiding place that is this huge hallow tree. They go in, plop the candy in their mouths but nothing seems to be happening, so they think. But then, Nate starts floating in the air. Higher and higher then they all start jumping and leaping until the candy melts in their mouths. They knew that Miss White must have more.

In the middle of the Candy Shop War, Nate, Summer, Pigeon and Trevor find out that Miss White is more dangerous than she looks. Miss White sends the four of them on a mission to dig up some person's grave using a dumb dummy. She says to take a telescope from the dead person's hand. They ask what is so important about the telescope She says, "A clue that leads to a treasure." The dummy digs up the grave, grabs the telescope, then puts the dirt back in the hole so no one ever dug up the grave would know they dug it up. Then Mr. Scott shows up. Mr. Scott is good; they met with him on a mission that Miss White gave the kids. He owns a little shop on a block and has been competing with Miss White when she moved in. Mr. Scott tells them to stay away from Miss. White and not give the telescope to her. They ask "why"? He says that the treasure is the fountain of youth and the fountain of youth makes you immortal. He also asks them if they will give him the clues to help him protect it. They don't trust him, so they say no. Then they run off and give the telescope to Miss White. She says, "thank you but I don't need you anymore. She tries to shove the hypnotizing fudge down their throats. She doesn't succeed but that was their chance to grab the telescope and steal some candy and get out of there. That was exactly what they did.
In the end of the Candy Shop War Miss White gets some new friends and the fight is at an end. Nate, summer, Trevor, and Pigeon were sent on a mission by Mr. Scott to receive the star gazer. On the stargazer is the final clue to the fountain of youth. They grab the stargazer from the library and on the way back they run into the bullies from school sent by Miss White. Nate, summer, Trevor, and Pigeon put a moon rock in their mouths and starts jumping home. They are being fallowed by the bullies. The bullies catch up to them and punched Trevor in the stomach and he spits out his moon rock and they take Trevor back to Miss White's candy shop. They give Trevor a mirror mint and trap him in a mirror! This is all I can give you you'll j

    THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!

This fiction book is a thrilling suspense that will keep you reading to see what happens next. Brandon Mulls sweet and magical book is full of unexpected twists and turns. In this book four friends meet a crazy candy shop lady who says she can make magical candy, and this is true, she can make candy that can give you magical powers. For example, she makes candy that can make you experience zero gravity, wipe out your memory, and even change you into a monster. So if you like magic and mysteries that you canâ¿¿t predict, then this is the book for you!

    Great Fantasy for young readers

This book has all the necessary qualities of a great kids fantasy: memorable characters, a great plot, imagination, and suspense. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in a fun book for middle school kids, and kids at heart like me.

Very Good Book, but problematic in some areas

I loved this book. It was exciting, funny, and amazingly written. Brandon Mull is an excellent writer. I would LOVE to give this book 5 stars, but I'm holding back because of one offensive issue: Mull's senseless handling of race.
He carelessly says, "Some Asian kid balling his eyes out and holding his mom.." at the beginning, and throws out tons of "The coach, a big black guy". The thing that annoyed me was the "melting-pot" candies that could change a person's race. Mull senselessly describes Asians having "squinty eyes" and a Latino boy being this and that, and one of his characters says "Cool! I was hoping for black!"
It just amplified racial stereotyping in that moment of the story, and I was fairly disappointed in Mull for adding that in.

A Book That You Can Sink Your Teeth Into

This book was a perfect combination of kids favorite elements in life and books. One element for sure would have to be the candy element. The next element would have to be candy. Journey as young kids Nate, Trevor, Summer and Pidgeon enter a world of sweet imagination. One day after school they stumble into a new candy store entitiled The Sweet Tooth Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe. Here they meet one of the stores workers Mrs. White who happens to make magical candy. The kids of course want some but the lady only agrees to share her candy with them if they complete tasks for her. So the kids join in to get some good candy out of it. But soon the kids realize that the tasks that the lady are sending them on are a bit dangerous and odd. Is there evil within the candy shoppe? Will the kids take a stand? Read the book to find out!

    Campers Approve

I'm reading this book aloud with a Summer Camp group of 8 to 10 year olds. They enjoy the book and a couple have checked it out from the library to read ahead. I do wish it did not contain any element of weapons and the mild violence is a bit of a downer, but most the action plays out via "magic candy" that imbues powers. Therefore, most of the action is on a very low violence scale. The kids love the book, so it's a winner.

    Fun, but not Fantastic

I'd probably give this a 3 1/2 stars. It was okay, but not as good as the Fablehaven books. Some parts were a little predictable and there were loose strings at the end that never got tied. All in all a fun juvenile read.
