Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Marcella D Ridgway, VMD, MS, DACVIM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This update of a 2001 text and color atlas of diagnostic cytology in the dog and cat expands coverage of topics and includes more color plates.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide practical guide to cytological procedures and diagnostic interpretation. With cytopathology continuing to play a major role in diagnostic evaluation of small animal patients and with the increasing desire on the part of pet owners to maximize the use of the least-invasive diagnostic techniques, an updated book with abundant reference images of various lesions is essential. This book meets these needs exceedingly well with extensive coverage and exceptional illustrations.
Audience: The book is directed at small animal veterinarians and veterinary students and focuses on the two species that represent the majority of patients seen in most small animal practices. The authors have completed training as veterinarians as well as advanced training in clinical specialties, and are experienced veterinary educators, which prepares them well for writing a practical guide that will meet the needs for clinical practice as well as for veterinary training.
Features: Initial chapters cover the general topics of collection and preparation of cytological samples and general concepts in cytological interpretation. Subsequent chapters address specific cytological considerations and specific lesions by body system, addressing normal as well as abnormal findings and covering the significant diseases affecting the particular body system. The book concludes with a chapter on advanced diagnostic techniques available to complement or extend diagnostic capabilities beyond simple light microscopy. The editors have carefully selected authors with particular expertise in the subject area for each chapter. The book has an abundance of pertinent illustrations and color plates of exceptional quality. Color plates are extensively captioned and the important features of each image are clearly indicated and explained. Images of gross lesions as well as cytological preparations maximize the book's clinical usefulness. Because the focus of this book is only on cytology of the dog and cat, another reference would be required for cytology of other small animal and exotic species seen in general practice.
Assessment: Compared to other currently available books on small animal cytology, this one does the best job of correlating gross, cytological, and histological lesions, which maximizes its clinical utility. By excluding coverage of hematology and limiting the species covered, the authors are able to expand the depth and breadth of coverage of canine and feline cytology, but this also may limit the book's appeal to veterinarians who desire a single reference for hematology and cytology or who see significant numbers of other species in their practices. The organization of the material by tissue/body system is particularly appropriate for a cytology book, as the source of the cytology sample is generally known and this format allows veterinarians to quickly reference the material pertaining to the sampled tissue. The abundant illustrations are of exceptional quality and pertinence, which is of utmost importance in selecting a cytology reference.
From the Publisher

"The book is full of colour illustrations, more than 1200 in fact, and is accompanied by a clear text. The layout of the chapters has been enormously improved compared to the first edition. Reading through the book I got very enthusiastic about its quality. This book has been very much improved from its first edition and has become one of the better ones in this field."
