Cannonball River Tales

Cannonball River Tales

by David Rounds, Alix Berenzy (Illustrator)

Editorial Reviews

Janice DelNegro
Rounds has created a new tall-tale hero named Tom Terry, a farmer with super strength and an ecological bent who comes from a river valley in the farmlands of North Dakota. Writing about Tom as if he were someone Rounds knew, the author follows Tom's adventures, from boyhood to old age, as he becomes progressively wiser through contacts with the natural spirits around him. Febold Feboldsson is Tom's single-minded, destructive foil. Rounds demonstrates good command of the structure and flavor of the tall-tale/folktale genre, and his use of descriptive language results in a smooth, entertaining story. The title may need booktalking as well as some discussion of the difference between an "original" tall tale and a "traditional" one, but it is a handsomely designed, successful example of "tall tale telling" that will prove popular with a wide age range of readers.
