    The Meaning of True Friendship

¿¿Oh, Pen!¿ Impy had silvery tears rolling off her opalescent face. `I can¿t do anything to take away your pain, but I can take you to the Cantaloupe Tree.¿¿ (Cantaloupe Trees, p. 71, Laura Smith). Everyone who has experienced the blessing of friendship has also experienced the heartache of pain¿our friends are not always interested in what we are, or they have their own dreams and desires that pull them in different directions. Sometimes, our friends meet other people so that we don¿t seem to matter to them anymore. In this 100 page book, Penelope, an 8 year old girl, and her stuffed elephant, Mandy, are best friends. They meet a tree fairy in their backyard that leads them on an adventure through a parade of trees including banana, buckeye, peanut and cantaloupe. Their friendship is tested when one friend finds fun and happiness where the other isn¿t welcome. Danger arises and the two must decide if sacrificing their material desires is worth saving their friendship. This is a delightful story for elementary age children to read or for preschool age to be read to. The ageless tale of good vs. evil is brought to the child¿s level through the vivid images of elephants, gorillas and fairies. The religious undertone that if you have faith and trust in a greater power (God), then he will give you the strength and courage to face what seems scary and impossible.
