Overview

Caps for Sale, a timeless classic, is now available as a musical narrative on cassette. The memorable melodies and catchy lyrics of the "Caps" songs are simple to learn and easy to sing. Recording artist Ann Marie Mulhearn brings the story to life in a new and mesmerizing way. This easy-to-read and sing-a-long story about a peddler and a band of mischievous monkeys is filled with wonderful background sounds, mischievous monkey music and splendid arrangements. Great for card rides, nap time, bed times or anytime, the musical version of Caps For Sale will have your children listening, reading and singing along again and again.

A band of mischievous monkeys steals every one of a peddler's caps while he takes a nap under a tree.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A cap peddler wakes from a nap to find all his caps are gone-a bunch of naughty monkeys have taken them up a tree. Angrily shaking his finger at the monkeys, the peddler demands his caps back, but the monkeys only shake their fingers and say "Tsz, tsz, tsz." No matter what the peddler does, the monkeys only imitate him. Finally, the peddler is so enraged he throws his cap on the ground-and all the monkeys follw suit!
New York Times
From an old folk tale [the author] has fashioned this bright picture book, infusing it with a humor which seems to have sprung from her own hearty enjoyment of the troubles of a peddler with a band of monkeys.

Meet the Author

Esphyr Slobodkina (the name is pronounced ess-FEER sloh-BOD-kee-nah) was born in the Siberian town of Chelyabinsk on Sept. 22, 1908.

Esphyr immigrated to the United States on a student visa at the age of 29. She enrolled at the National Academy of Design, NYC, and in the 1930s, she worked painting lamp shades and soon after murals for the WPA. Esphyr was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, which began amid controversy in 1936.

In 1937 Slobodkina met the children's author Margaret Wise Brown. In an effort to find work as an illustrator, Slobodkina wrote and illustrated a story with collage called Mary And The Poodies to present to Brown. This began a new career for Slobodkina, who illustrated many children's stories for Ms. Brown (including Sleepy ABCs and the Big and Little series) while still continuing her work as an abstract artist.

In her autobiography, (portions available through this web-site) Ms. Slobodkina wrote, "When Margaret died, I was left without a writer, and since she always insisted that she liked the way I told my stories, I took a deep breath and began to send them to my agent." Ms. Slobodkina took her responsibility as a children's book author seriously. In her memoir she wrote: "The verbal patterns and the patterns of behavior we present to children in these lighthearted confections are likely to influence them for the rest of their lives. These aesthetic impressions, just like the moral teachings of early childhood, remain indelible."

Caps for Sale was first published in 1938. Since then it has sold more than two million copies. Today it is considered a children’s book classic as generation after generation pass the story along to new readers. In sales it ranks with such classics as Good Night Moon, according to Publisher's Weekly.

Caps for Sale, won a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 and is memorialized in a painting by Ms. Slobodkina on permanent exhibition in the West Hartford Library, CT.

Ms. Slobodkina wrote and illustrated numerous other books, including Mary and The Poodies (1937), The Wonderful Feast, (1955), The Clock (1956), The Long Island Ducklings (1961), and Pezzo the Peddler and the Circus Elephant, which was first published in 1967 and was reissued in 2002 as Circus Caps for Sale, to name a few.

At the age of 88, Esphyr's primary focus became overseeing the production of musical storybook cassettes of all twenty of her children's books.

At age 90, Esphyr designed a mini museum in Glen Head, Long Island, NY (through her Slobodkina Foundation) as a place where guests can visit and view more than 200 works of art, her handmade dolls and jewelry, as well as her complete collection of children's storybooks, including some original illustrations.

Famed artist and author Esphyr Slobodkina was a leader of the abstract movement in the United States from the 1930s until her death at age 93 in July 2002.

Slobodkina’s works have received high acclaim. Her paintings, sculptures and literary works are part of the collections of The Metropolitan Museum, NY; The National Gallery in Washington, D.C; The Smithsonian; The Hecksher Museum, L.I., NY (where she has a permanent wing); The Whitney Museum, NY; The Wadsworth Museum, Hartford, CT; The Northeast Children’s Literature Collection, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT; and more.

Barnes and Noble needs to step it up!!

This title is only compatible with the Nook Color. Despite B&N using images of this book to demonstrate the features of their Nook for Kids iPad app, it does not work with iPad. I was very excited to see that there were interactive kids books available to use on the iPad but with no sure way to know which are compatible and which are not, it makes the app practically worthless. I loved this book as a kid and hoped to share it with my daughter on the iPad. This book is 5 stars but the B&N version is a bait and switch!

NOOKBook is a joke. Can not even use.

This book is not even readable on a nook. The images and text are not even formated to fit on the scree. It's like the each page was converted to an image file that is the orig. size of the book even for text. Resizing the text does nothing. Called and B&N did get a refund. Sad I had to put 1 star to warn nook users because I love the book.

Support confirmed the book was not usable and could do nothing for other than refunding.

    A family favorite!

My husband and I rediscovered this book about a month ago and it instantly became one of our son's favorites. He acts it out and dances to the songs (great touch!) We highly recommend this as an addition to your kiddoes Nook library shelf.

    DO NOT GET THIS BOOK

It doesn't even let you download it. It just took my money and didn't even let me dowload. So it does not really work.

Fun story for kids to join in the telling and even "acting out" the parts. Illustrations are distinctive and appealing.

    My Baby Loves It

Of course Caps For Sale is an awesome book, and personally I have a few complaints about the adaptation of this story for Nook, but I'm giving it 5 stars because my 16-month old turns on the Nook all by herself, selects this book, and plays with it over and over and over again!

The type is quite small, but if the book is being read to you by the machine, this obviously doesn't matter much. At first I didn't love that a few of the original illustrations had been crudely animated, but now I appreciate that this maintains the integrity of the original. There are a few interactive things my daughter won't do yet, but I'm very excited for when she's able to (find the different-colored hats, draw a sun, etc.) The person reading the story also sings some songs throughout, none of which I loved at first, but they're growing on me, maybe because I hear them a million times a day! Frankly, I think the music could be better, but like I said, my daughter really loves this book, so I'm happy with it too!

    CAPS FOR SALE

Caps for Sale is a b ook that my now 40 year old son absolutely loved. He was introduced to it in a library story hour. I, of course, had to buy the book for him. I read it to him countless times. When he outgrew the story, I put it away for the future. Years later, I read the book to my 2 grandsons. I did have to purchase a new book for the boys, because the original book was falling apart. The 2 boys loved the book as much as my son did.

    LOVE IT!

My 2 1/2 old Grandson loves this book! We reread it all the time. The funny monkeys, the learning of colors, & sequencing are all learning ideas. He also likes the full story version. Remember that most board books are not the total story.

    Great Book

We love this book. The repetition makes it great for young readers. And, the use of colored caps and monkeys delights ever time. A favorite of both of ours.

A wonderful story you'll remember your parents reading to you.

The classic story of the peddler, his caps, and the monkeys who borrow them. Children of all ages will enjoy the monkey's antics and toddlers especially will be able to relate to the peddler's frustration. The story can be read aloud or the cd can be popped in for even more entertainment (the cd contains additional songs).

A wonderful addition to any child's listening library. Great on car trips as well.

Children's Class in a Beautiful Format

My parents read Caps for Sale to me when I was a child, and now I have the pleasure of sharing this book with my children. The simple "monkey see, monkey do" premise elicits laughter from my kids each time they hear the story and see the pictures. For maximum affect, as you read the story aloud, be sure to reflect in your voice and movements the protagonist's increasing frustration with the monkeys as each page in the tale unfolds. I mimic the peddler's movements, and my kids mimic the monkey's movements, and everyone laughs. This book has been a favorite of multiple generations of children worldwide since 1940 and is worth adding to any child's library. Check out the companion book too -- "Circus Caps for Sale." Enjoy!

    ALL TIME FAVORITE

When my children were small, my husband read this book to them over and over. It was one of their favorite books. When I looked for birthday gifts for my precious neice, Nylah, I bought this book for her. I cannot wait to read Caps for Sale to her, she is so smart and inquisitive, I know she will love it!
