Library Journal
In the mid-1990s, Waid (Irredeemable; Kingdom Come) wrote the excellent Captain America: Operation Rebirth. Here, he returns to retool the story of Cap's revival after decades of suspended animation. Near the end of World War II, Cap and his partner, Bucky, discuss what they might do after the war, and Cap finds it difficult to imagine life away from combat. Following the accident that (supposedly) killed Bucky and put Cap on ice, Cap is revived by the Avengers in a present-day world of cell phones and email where he feels entirely out of place. In a plot innovation by Waid, Cap's first thought is that he wants only to time-travel back to his own era—an ambition that's thwarted until a villain provides a possible solution. VERDICT Waid's portrait of Cap as a soldier struggling to find a new identity and understand his changed environment is convincing. A couple of plot points feel forced, and Molina's artwork indulges in too many cartoony facial expressions, but overall this fine book will satisfy both longtime fans and those introduced to the character by Hollywood.—S.R.
