Overview

Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries, Volume One, by Ashley Gardner

A collection of the first three novels in the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries series, plus two Captain Lacey short stories first published in mystery magazines.

This volume includes:
The Hanover Square Affair (full-length novel)
A Regimental Murder (full-length novel)
The Glass House (full-length novel)
The Gentleman’s Walking Stick (two short stories)

Meet Captain Gabriel Lacey, a half-pay cavalry officer who returns to Regency London with little money and no purpose, but with a sense of honor and fairness. He’s pulled into a search for a missing young woman, and thus begins investigating crime, using his status as a gentleman but a poor one to cross the boundaries between the top of society and the working class of the back streets.

In The Hanover Square Affair, a missing girl and horrific corpse plunge Captain Lacey into the dark underworld of Regency London.

In A Regimental Murder Captain Lacey is on hand to save the life of a beautiful widow; he then investigates the death of her husband, a colonel who had been accused of murdering a cavalry officer during the Peninsular War.

In The Glass House, Lacey investigates the death of a barrister’s young wife, and links her to a notorious brothel where the haut ton play.

Two short stories finish off the collection: In “The Disappearance of Miss Sarah Oswald,” Lacey is asked to locate a man’s missing daughter, though he senses that the family would be just as happy for her to remain missing. In “The Gentleman’s Walking Stick,” Lacey untangles a web of deceit involving a respectable society man, his only clue being a missing walking stick.

Join Captain Lacey and his friends as he investigates intrigue, murder, and villainy from the plush ballrooms of Mayfair to the darker streets of Regency London.

I really enjoyed these books.  Captain Lacey's character is multi-dimensional and the other characters are wholly believable.  I cannot wait to read more by this author.

    Great Series

Captain Lacey is great. Just the gentleman that we wish we had roaming the streets and helping people now. The books are well written and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes period mysteries.

    Amazing Mystery Novels!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this set! Come on, for 99 cents, you get this set of amaing mysteries. This author writes on the same level as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. A must read!

Definitely recommend to readers who enjoy Regency Era mysteries

I liked the characters and the Regency Era feel. It was a disappointing time when I came to the end of the three novels and two short stories. I will look for more of the Captain Lacey series.

These are wonderful books . Captain Lacey is one of my new favorite detectives. The characters are wonderfully flawed -- historically relevant, and the plots are filled with good, unexpected twists. These books are "page-turners" -- enjoy!

Good mystery combo of historical England/London/exarmy/social issues/women/ mysterios crime boss

Characters and plots move thru books and keep you interested. No great literature but good story telling. Not a fast food but comfort food for snow bound. Ready to buy #2. This was a good buy. Would make a better pbs series than the lawyer one mom

    Ugh

The author can write, but his protagonist is so holier than thou he is almost intolerable. I spent a very great portion of the first book muttering, "oh, get over yourself." And I never made it past the first one, for fear of sending my blood pressure through the roof.

    Definitely not recommended.
