Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
This ten-chapter book from the "Lilly" series of "First Novels" contains short sentences and an easy-to-read tale about a topic of interest to active young girls. In the opening chapter, friends Minna, Theresa, Lilly, and Annifind out they will be on a new soccer team that is being formed. Although Theresa and Minna are not thrilled with playing, they join and discover that soccer is fun. Soon Anni hurts her ankle, and a new player is needed. That is when Sara, the coach's niece, joins the team and helps the girls learn about more than soccer. Sara is a good player, but she is hassled by the opposing team's coach who says her hijab (Muslim scarf) is not safe. They all learn it comes off easily and cannot hurt anyone. One thing leads to another, and soon Sara's team members opt not to play if Sara cannot play. While grown-ups sort out the rules, the girls from both teams have a good time playing soccer on the sidelines for fun. In the end, everyone learns about diversity and acceptance through a tale that is fun and realistic. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
