Overview

Love? Might as well ask for the moon. But a man can dream...

Despite his looks and ambition, Midshipman Joshua Andrews hides urges that, in his world, make him an abomination. Living in fear of exposure, unnecessary risk is something he studiously avoids. Once he sets eyes on the elegant picture of perfection that is Peter Kenyon, though, temptation lures him like the siren call of the sea.

Soon to be promoted to captain, Peter is the darling of the Bermuda garrison, with a string of successes behind him and a suitable bride lined up to share his future. He seems completely out of Joshua's reach.

Then the two men are forced to serve on a long voyage under a sadistic commander with a mutinous crew. As the tension aboard the vessel heats up, their unexpected friendship intensifies into a passion neither man can rein in.

Intimacy like theirs can only exist in the shadow of the gallows. Both men are determined their "youthful curiosity" must die before it brings disaster down on them. Yet neither man can root it from his heart. Warriors both, they think nothing of risking their lives for their country. In the end they must decide whether love, too, is worth dying for.

Warning: Contains some mild m/m sex scenes and some graphic violence.

~ Rainbow Reviews

“…a breathtaking and expertly written historical m/m romance. The author does a wonderful job of recreating the world of 1779 for the reader. I truly felt like I was transported back in time… The romance between these two men is complicated but also very sensual. The author has written a novel that is an exciting and satisfying blend of romance and adventure.”
~ Romance Junkies

“Adding in well-defined characters with a quick moving plot, this story delights on many levels, with elements of action, romance, culture, bigotry, and honor set across the oceans in a stunning tale that entrances from the beginning to the end. …The author has delivered a wonderfully crafted historical that is sure to please romance lovers.”

Meet the Author

Alex Beecroft was born in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and grew up in the wild countryside of the Peak District. Alex studied English and Philosophy before accepting employment with the Crown Court where she worked for a number of years. Now a stay-at-home mum and full-time author, Alex lives with her husband and two daughters in a little village near Cambridge and tries to avoid being mistaken for a tourist.
Alex is only intermittently present in the real world. She has led a Saxon shield wall into battle, toiled as a Georgian kitchen maid, and recently taken up an 800-year-old form of English folk dance, but she still hasn’t learned to operate a mobile phone.

    INTERESTING

As an adventure story is pretty remarkable, as a romance novel not quite, and definitively, it is not erotica. Too many points of view (POV) made the reading experience a little tiresome for a romance. I understand why the author used many POVs, and why each character existed, although, as a romance novel too many characters' thoughts take away the closeness one would expect from the two heroes. Basically, I hope the heroes go to live with the natives at the end, for their own sake.
