“Where do you think we are?” Woody asked. “It’s getting really cold in here.” Roman hit the back door with his fist. “I’ll tell you where we are. ...

Roman Sanchez’s life has become a nightmare. His father, a SWAT officer, has been killed in the line of duty. Then masked gunmen storm Roman’s classroom and hold him and three other boys hostage in a remote mountain cabin. There’s not much time before the kidnappers’ deadly threats are carried out. Can Roman overcome his fear—and the memory of his father’s death—to lead the boys’ desperate fight for freedom?

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Roman Sanchez and his classmates are kidnapped by masked gunmen who threaten to kill them unless they are paid ransom money. Roman takes charge of the group in their fight for survival, using techniques and the karate taught him by his deceased father, a SWAT team officer. After an escape, recapture, and some life-threatening moments, the police catch up with them. This is a short, intense, action-packed story by a master of formula adventure. The implausibility of the situation and the lack of character development will be unimportant to readers caught up in the story. Reluctant readers will especially appreciate the hair-raising plot and the smooth writing that does not waste a word. Suspense is maintained to the very end. Anne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA

    Parental Review

I read this book to assist my child with a book report. Thought it was at a 3rd - 4th grade reading level, but there is violence in the book (one character gets shot)so parent may want to make own decision of age appropriateness. Also found the setting changed frequently (school, to bus,to woods, to cabin)so child may also need assistance following this part of the story grammar. Overall it is an exciting read for a child, and an excellent survival theme book.
