Something loud crashed over their heads, and they could hear gravel and dirt hitting the top of the truck. It happened again and again. The last sound they heard was the scrape of a shovel picking up more dirt. Then it was quiet.

“Where do you think we are?” Woody asked. “It’s getting really cold in here.” Roman hit the back door with his fist. “I’ll tell you where we are. We’re buried alive!”

Roman Sanchez’s life has become a nightmare. His father, a SWAT officer, has been killed in the line of duty. Then masked gunmen storm Roman’s classroom and hold him and three other boys hostage in a remote mountain cabin. There’s not much time before the kidnappers’ deadly threats are carried out. Can Roman overcome his fear—and the memory of his father’s death—to lead the boys’ desperate fight for freedom?

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Roman Sanchez and his classmates are kidnapped by masked gunmen who threaten to kill them unless they are paid ransom money. Roman takes charge of the group in their fight for survival, using techniques and the karate taught him by his deceased father, a SWAT team officer. After an escape, recapture, and some life-threatening moments, the police catch up with them. This is a short, intense, action-packed story by a master of formula adventure. The implausibility of the situation and the lack of character development will be unimportant to readers caught up in the story. Reluctant readers will especially appreciate the hair-raising plot and the smooth writing that does not waste a word. Suspense is maintained to the very end. Anne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA

    Kidnapped

The tittle of my book was called 'captive'.The auther of this story is Gary Paulsen. This story has six main charicters. There names are Spoon,Ripper,Roman,Woody,Mitch, and Jeff. The plot takes place in a school untill four boys are kidnapped by two kidnappers that go by the names of Ripper and Spoon. The setting mainly takes place were the four boys are being held hostage.,in a tiny shack out in the middle of no were surounded by woods. My opinion of this story was that it is very adventuress and it will put you on the edge of your seat as you are reading. Not only that but after i started reading this book, i didnt want to stop.I would give this book four stars because it gives such good detail that it makes you think that you are really there while you are reading it.The moral to this story is to all ways pay attention at school because you never do know what kind of surprises might pop up.
