Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Predictability, contrivance and flat dialogue abound in this historical romance by acclaimed author Small. In 1461 war-torn England, Alix Givet is forced to marry a baron's cruel son in order to find refuge for her dying father. When her husband commits suicide, Alix's relief soon turns to horror as her father-in-law announces that he intends to marry her. On foot, Alix runs across the border to Scotland, where she's rescued from a wintry storm by Malcolm Scott, a gruff laird who vowed never to marry again after his first wife betrayed him. A few graphic sex scenes later, the two have fallen in love and married; the rest of the novel they spend dealing with the English baron-cum-raving madman who is convinced that Alix is rightfully his. Two-dimensional characters-either without flaw or completely unredeemable-and hastily dispatched political/historical background sink the story, but Small's included enough steamy scenes that fans should find what they're looking for. A romance or a tragedy?

*Spoiler alert* I was not pleased with this book at all. From the cover and the back of the book you think you you will be reading a charming book of love between a Scottish laird and English lady. What you get is a little romance, an annoying story line that seems never-ending with Alix's annoying ex father-in-law and then within the last 20 pages a whole new story line which is supposed to be a "surprise" and "twist", but only ends up being poorly developed and then within the last 5 pages one of the most charming characters of the book, Fiona, is killed. I would never have considered this book to be a romance, and I was incredibly disappointed in this purchase!

    Not good

I was intrigued by the cover art, and had heard of Ms. Small before, but never read her. This book is a wealth of English/Scottish history, during the 1400's and the idea of the heroine being the daughter of the physician to the Queen seemed like an interesting character..boy, was I disappointed. The main character, heroine - Alix is a sixteen year old, and is for most part sold into marriage to her husband by her father and the overthrown Queen and King of England. This arrangement is done in exchange for a place for her father - elderly and sick, to have a place to rest during his last days. The Queen takes her mad King and hightails it to Scotland, leaving Alix to this new life. She is cruelly abused by said husband, of which the readers are privy to the degrading things done to her. Her father-in law knows about the abuse and does nothing...OK...given the time how women were basically brood mares, I can see this may take place. Then, the husband dies, and the father-in-law wants her for himself...Eeew...on all counts. Alix flees to the neighboring border in Scotland and lands in Malcolm Scott's backyard...half dead. He takes her in, and she befriends and teaches his young daughter. Since he's a widower and in need of a mother figure for his child...OK, so here things are fairly normal. Then the two start to fall in love...etc. etc. As they try to make a life with one another, the crazy father-in-law keeps looking for Alix, hunts her..abducts her, etc. OK - Not bad for the antagonist character..except, there are so many plot changes, and dumps and repeats of information and purple prose...it's nauseating. The intimate moments border on the erotica, and when Malcolm's long thought dead crazy nymphomaniac wife reappears...things go from erotic to sadistic. The ending was rushed..and not believable at all...I forced myself to read all the 400 plus pages..to see if things might improve...I am tempted to ask for my money back. As an avid romance reader, I will not be purchasing any more of Ms. Small's works.

Worst Ending In Romance Novel History

I usually really enjoy books by Bertrice Small. I read romance novels to relax and enjoy a happy ending. I won't describe the whole book, because everybody has already done that, but the resolution to the first wife problem was rushed and anti-climactic...so she dies instantly, big deal...that does not really give the reader any sense of justice being served to this woman who is beyond evil...but killing the little daughter in the process, WELL! That was just unecessary and ruined the whole book! Having another daughter a few years later and giving her the name of the dead daughter is NOT A HAPPY ENDING!!! And it's kind of creepy. I don't read these novels to end up crying at the end, especially for the wrong reasons. It is one thing to have some tear jerker moments within the novel that furthers the story or helps develop the character, but the death of Fiona did not do that at all and was so totally unneeded. I really hope you read these reviews, Ms. Small, because you have thoroughly disappointed a dedicated reader. I wish I knew what you were thinking when you chose to end this novel the way you did...maybe you should have bounced the idea off a few people first...Wow...I just can't get over, or stop saying how disappointed I was in the last third of this book.

I wanted to throw this book in the trash.

I don't usually write many reviews on books, I just rate them. However, I felt this book need a review from me. This is the first Beatrice Small book I have ever read and I HATED it. I am an avid book reader. I have read many authors over many different genres and have never came across a book I disliked as much as this one. I seriously contemplated throwing it in the trash. And that is a huge no no for me. The plot kept going in different directions, it was hard to figure out what was going on. The characters seemed forced and the ending was horrible. Even the intimate scenes between the couple were just...corny (for lack of a better work) I will never read another book from Beatrice Small.

    weird

I really wasn't impressed with this book, it had a strange twist three quarters of the way through the book. The ending was terrible, I feel like it was rushed to be finished. I will never read this book again, and if I ever read another book from this author, I'll be sure to borrow it from the library instead of buying it.

After reading a so-so second book in this series, I was estremely happy with this story! I just love how Beatrice Small ties history into these stories. It makes me feel like it could have really happened and I'm just hearing it second hand. Look forward to reading the next book!

    Another Small? book

Alix Givet is the daughter of Queen Margaret's physician and as they are fleeing the Yorkists, the band of refugees seek shelter with Sir Udolf Watteson. Her father, ill, can go no farther, so a bargain is made where Alix will marry his son Hayle and the two will remain. However, Hayle doesn't want a bride, he only wants his mistress, so he mistreats Alix for the entire time that they are wed. Her father agonizes over her situation but dies before she is freed when Hayle's mistress dies and he kills himself, Alix is forced to flee when her father-in-law decides that he will marry her because he now needs an heir.
Setting off on foot by herself, Alix crosses the border to Scotland where she is found near dead and taken to the keep of a brooding border lord. The Love story that follows twists and turns to an unusual ending.
This was not one of Bertrice Small's better books. I saw a re-write of Skye O'Malley at the beginning and some of her other themes in the middle. The writing was a bit staid in this one, and the characters were not as well defined as normal. Usually, Small gets 4 stars from me, but this one is only a 3.

    Not her best work...

I liked the characters in the book. Especially the hero, but there still seemed to be something lacking. It also seemed to be on repeat most of the time. Dealing with the same problem over and over again. It got a little old. I also didn't like the ending it was very abrupt and tragic. I didn't see why it had to end as tragically as it did. I have read better by this author. It wasn't the worst book I have read, but I wont be putting it into my permanent library. GREAT Book cover though!

    heated fifteenth century historical romance

In 1461 the war seems to impact everyone even the court of King Henry VI and Queen Margaret. With her dad the royal physician to the queen dying, Alix Givet needs a home for herself and her father Alexander. Margaret arranges for her to marry an abusive Northumbrian aristocrat, Hayle Wattison, son of a baron. With the death of her beloved dad, Alix considers running away from her odious brutish husband. She feels euphorically free when the beast kills himself. That lasts a nanosecond as her father-in-law informs her he will marry her. Rather than being wed to another abuser, Alix flees on foot heading towards wintry Scotland. Laird Malcolm Scott saves her life and though he vowed never to marry after his wife betrayed him, they fall in love and wed. However, her former father-in-law is coming to claim his bride. --- This heated fifteenth century historical romance emits enough steam to melt the snow that nearly kills the courageous heroine. Die hard fans of Bertrice Small will enjoy the torrid romance between Malcolm and Alix. However, other readers need to consider the extremes of the prime cast whereas the led duet is 100% good and honorable, the psychopathic baron is 200 proof amoral evil. --- Harriet Klausner
