BOOK ONE OF THE DARK DUET:

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.

I'm an educated, well read grown woman, so why on earth do I feel embarrassed to admit how much I loved this book? I love a book that gives you a stomach ache when its getting tense. I love a book that has me thinking about the characters and their hopeless plights while Im shopping for carrots and yogurt. I love a book that makes me scream at my nook because she is an idiot and doesn't love him like I would. I love a book that makes me hesitate to pick it up again after a few hours break because Im not sure Im ready for the emotional roller coaster to begin again. If your looking for romantic eroticism, the kind that makes you want to wake up your boyfriend in the middle of the night with amorous intentions, this is NOT the book. In fact, you hardly notice the sex happening with all the deep psychological manipulations taking place.(including your own mind!) This is an amazing author. I want to hug her.

Holy crap, this story rocked me and made me question everything!! I can't honestly say how I feel about the relationship between Caleb and Livvie, but I do know that I feel for him (a lot) and believe he deserves more, just as Livvie does. I am so tormented over what is right and what is wrong, but I think this story is meant to make you question what you believe. I am so anxious for Seduced...I can hardly stand it!

I thought the author did a great jobs, I mean really great. This book is so dark and twisted, I love it. I can't wait to find out more! It took me approximately 3 paragraphs to be hooked in and read the whole thing in less than 6 hours.

A good book I guess, but I just found it disturbing...

This is one of my top 3 favorite books of all time. I have read Captive in the Dark and Seduced in the Dark 3 times. And I was just as captivated each time. Yes, it is dark. Yes, it is intense. Yes, it is hard to read at times. But it is more than worth it. This is not an easy love story. I hated Caleb just as much as I loved him. But oh boy did I end up loving him. BUY THIS BOOK!!! You will not be disappointed!!!

Kudos to the author for creating a complex and compelling character in Caleb. His backstory helped make him intriguing and in general he was just very well written. The interactions between him and Livvie were also well done, and often as twisted as advertised - but also sometimes developed a little too slowly and even got a little repetitive. I've heard the 2nd book is a lot better and I almost wonder if this book couldn't have been edited down and been the first 1/3 of the second novel instead of its own story. As some other reviewers have noted, the chapters from Livvie's perspective were quite repetitive and definitely would have benefited from some tightening.

I read this book a long time ago, rated it 5 stars, but never reviewed it. Recently I did a reread and wanted to write some focusing on Caleb. I love Caleb, who is one of my top ten of all times in the book boyfriends department. The first thing that stands out to me in the beginning is how much pleasure he derives just from watching her, before anything has even happened (as far as the Livvie/Caleb situation). He was excited and instantly drawn to her. The reader feels suspended on the edge of their seat waiting to find out what will happen, how it will play out. After her abduction, she still can't hate him even though she feels she should. While he is completely consumed with her, she is not immune. She dreams of him, a perfect angel. Although he may look like heaven, he is equal parts heaven and hell. -He was my tormentor and my solace; the creator of the dark and the light within.- As more details of his past are provided, he becomes an even more complex character. He is so gorgeous and his been so tormented and is now fighting his desires, emotions, background, pain, fate, etc etc etc. I wanted to hold the little boy he once was and encourage the man he is that he could change his future. The entire story is up then down, emotional wave after emotional wave, surprise, sexiness, ugliness, doom and hope. It just doesn't get much better. I know this isn't a proper review, but as I stated I just wanted to write a little on Caleb.

I absolutely loved this book.  While completely terrible, the story of Caleb being kidnapped as a young boy kept me riveted.  When he kidnaps Olivia to train her to be a pleasure slave he fights an internal struggle of wanting to get revenge on the man that kidnapped him and feeling guilty for what he is doing to Olivia.  Every memory that is divulged of Caleb's past and Olivia's struggle of wanting to get free while fighting an attraction to Caleb kept me wanting to learn more about these characters.

I am in awe after reading this! I never thought a book could grab me and take me in as this series did, CJ Roberts you are as they say on youtube "Boss Lady" by far the BEST books I have ever read!

This is an extremely entertaining book (well written). It captured my attention from the beginning and at times it's scary to think that some of the issues addressed in this book do really happen. It is a great sexual and psychological book. At some points that book is a bit slow, wanting it to get somewhere. The author did well in making one feel sympathy for Caleb, even though you really want to hate the character for his actions. I can't wait to continue reading what happens next in Seduced in the Dark.

Did I like this story? ABSOLUTELY! Did it stay with me? ABSOLUTELY! Did it make me sick? ABSOLUTELY! I had this story for a couple of months before I "dared" to read (because of the Sample I read and the reviews I read). I thought Caleb was the scum of the earth--he was a drug dealer, human traficker and a murderer. Then, why/how did she, Livvie, fall in love with him? I guess I am not a bleeding heart liberal who thinks true sorrow begets total absolution. Also, the tension in this story was epic. I had to put the book down several times just to go do something sweet! The chase and the ending are riveting, (oh, hope I am not getting the next book mixed up with this first one); but what I love and hate the most is that this story won't leave my mind. I think about it constantly--quite unusual since so many books are forgetable. Well, can't wait to finish the next one I just started.

I'm writing this review after reading the Dark Duet series for the second time. So some of my comments are from the first time I read them and some are from the second time. I had been hearing people talk about the first two books for awhile but to be honest after reading the book blurbs I thought there would be no way I would enjoy the books because they sounded too dark. But after much encouragement from friends, I finally read them and yes they were dark but the writing is amazing and somehow she was able to make me not only like but eventually fall in love with Caleb. Livvie is a teenager who tries to bend in and go unnoticed. Her home life is rough and she can't wait to graduate from high school. She encounters a handsome stranger on the street who saves her from eminent danger. Caleb has a troubled past and has been unofficially adopted by a man named Rafiq and they are both out for revenge against the same man. Caleb has been training pleasure slaves and needs the perfect girl to be the pawn in their revenge plan. This book is told from both Livvie and Caleb's POV's. I loved that we got to get both of their perspectives and got to learn a little about Caleb and his past. Livvie has been kidnapped and is shocked when she realizes Caleb is her abductor. She begins to fight back and soon learns that her actions have consequences. Livvie has always been called a whore by her mother and begins to struggle with the fact that she was and still is attracted to Caleb. She also blames herself for her own abduction. I won't lie, some of the early scenes are pretty hard to take. I can't stress enough that this series IS worth the read. We learn things about Caleb's past that to a point help explain or help you sympathize with the choices he's made. Caleb begins to have feelings for Livvie and they start to cloud his judgement. Those feelings lead to a dangerous turn of events for Livvie. As I've read this for the second time, I didn't remember being so emotional while reading but the last to chapters had me near hysterics and set up book 2 (seduced in the dark) nicely. When I started this series I would've never thought I'd be so emotionally connected to these characters. I may have a little bit of a girl crush on C.J. Roberts.  FAVORITE QUOTE:  "For what it's worth Livvie, I never thought of you as a whore. And you are...the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

Disturbingly good book. Hands down one of my top 5 favorite of the year. So lets get past the one big thing. Yes this book is seriously messed up, in a good way. What had me at this book is a few things, first off, you can't stop reading it. You have to know what's going to happen next. Secondly, you want to know more about the characters. Each one has such secretive and horrific pasts. Thirdly, I have never read a book where I am cheering for the bad guy! Seriously, who wants the captive to be found by the bad guy and wants them to get together...ME! In all honestly you should hate the main character Caleb, he is sinister, mean, emotionally and physically abusive but you can't hate him. Not to mention the captive, 18 year old Olivia. You don't want her to get away, you want her to stay. It's crazy!!!! The only comparison I can make to this story is a flipped version of the movie Taken. You see things more from the captive's point of view and the emotional abuse these victims go through. The story is enticing and oh so addictive. I am super excited to read on and see what happens. I hope you enjoy!

I wasn't sure about this book at first. It took a little while to get into, but once I did I was captivated. I loved the dynamic between Livvie and Caleb. She though naive is learning to come into her own power and Caleb though extremely damaged is learning to love. I didn't want to root for this unlikely couple but you find yourself wanting a happy ending between the two of them even though it doesn't seem meant to be.

Captive in the Dark is a book that's been on my radar for a while now. My co-reviewer, Erin, loves this series, but I was a bit nervous about reading it for some reason. I read some pretty naughty, raunchy, and sometimes twisted books, but this was my first book about sexual slavery. It was intense, emotional, and disturbingly sexy.  The book begins with Caleb basically stalking Olivia. He's looking for a particular type of girl to train to become a slave. He plans to train her, take her back to the middle east, and use her for revenge. Olivia fits the profile he's looking for. From what he's observed, she seems like the perfect sub. As the story progresses after he's taken her captive, he's surprised to find that Olivia is stronger than she first appeared. Olivia is a survivor and a fighter. He's never met anyone like her and she stirs up feelings that he can't quite name. See, Caleb doesn't remember his childhood. His earliest memories are from when he was used in a brothel as a child. Disturbing, right? Honestly, Caleb broke my heart. While I was nervous for Olivia, I wanted to learn more about Caleb. He is one of the most wounded characters I've ever read.  As I was reading, I kept thinking that I must have a really high threshold for disturbing situations. Maybe it's because I read so many different types of books? Anyway, while I was reading Caleb and Olivia's story, despite the circumstances in which they were brought together, I wanted them to be together. Because seriously...I loved and hated Caleb simultaneously. I was somewhat prepared for some of the violence, but I really felt like Caleb treated Olivia the same as a Dom would treat a Sub. From what I've read anyway. The sexual scenes between Caleb and Olivia were pretty darn hot. I had to hide my kindle on the plane and I'm sure my face was flushed. Now, there was more violence in the second book, but I'll review that book in a separate post.  Overall, I really liked this story. This is not an easy book to read, so I'll make that warning very clear. However, it was beautifully written and truly gave me a clear sense of what was happening and how Olivia was feeling. I also feel that it's a testament to the author that she could make such an unlikable character out to be a hero. That's a hard feat. I couldn't wait to get to the next book and I was happy to have it on hand. If you like books that are dark, emotional, and psychological, this is a great pick for you.  Quotes: ~He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, that includes puppies, babies, rainbows, sunsets, and sunrises. I can't even call him a man-men don't look this good.-Loc2237 ~'You're not a damsel in distress and I'm not the handsome prince come to save you.' No. He wasn't. In real life you has to save yourself.-Loc3364 ~For the first time in recent memory, Caleb wanted something other than revenge. He wanted the girl.-Loc3475
