Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
If you are looking for an unusual book for a middle school-aged child, then this one is for you. The author gives the readers the opportunity to go for whichever adventure they want to experience throughout the book. The opening begins the story and as early as page 9, the reader has to choose between two endings. The first choice is whether to select “…resisting the temptation of low company and hurry back to the cabin (turn to page 77)” or “…play along with the sailors’ tune? (Turn to page 86).” Each selection takes the reader on a totally different adventure. I must say I tried all of the choices and was surprised at some of the outcomes. All were believable, but very different from each other. Some are shorter than others and more involved; however, all are interesting and will hold the readers’ attention. The illustrations are excellent and done in graphic style. This adds both understanding and awareness to the text. The creativity of this series is bound to be a hit with kids because of the interaction they have with the text; however, I did have mixed feelings about the endings. The majority of them have the reader either winding up dead or grieving for the loss of a parent. I do wish some of the endings left the reader with hope or happiness. I do recommend this series--”Twisted Journeys.” Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs

Gr 4 Up
In the style of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series (Bantam), Pirates allows readers to control where the story goes, using both fairly lengthy prose and comic-book-style pages to move it along. The medium works well with the second-person narration, and Witt's illustrations provide an excellent reflection of the tone created by the Fonteses. The only downside to the story is the lack of happy endings; in many instances, "you" end up either dead or mourning the loss of a parent. One possibility leaves the story completely open-ended. Where variations on the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series are popular, this is sure to be a hit.
