Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
November 1999

You've probably seen Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller on "Oprah." Now it's time to ask yourself: When you eat a full breakfast, do you get hungry before it's time for lunch? Once you begin to eat starches, snack foods, or sweets, is it hard to stop? Do you get inexplicably tired in the middle of the afternoon? Do you take insulin, female replacement hormones, or medication for high blood pressure or cholesterol problems? You could be a carbohydrate addict!

Millions of Americans are carbohydrate-addicted — caught in a painful cycle of food craving and weight gain. If you are one of them and over 40, you know that losing weight — and keeping it off — gets harder all the time. You also know that most diet and weight-loss programs are quick fixes that rarely bring success in the long run. But simple and permanent weight loss isn't a lost cause!

Drawing from their breakthrough research into the carbohydrate-insulin connection — the discovery that excess amounts of insulin in the bloodstream cause us to store more fat and crave certain foods — Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller offer a comprehensive nutritional plan specifically tailored to the lifestyle and changing needs of the mature adult.

In the Hellers' book, you'll discover:

  • Why "healthful" foods could be making you gain weight
  • How to control and reduce cravings and keep insulin levels in balance — without giving up the foods you love
  • Which medications may be making you carbohydrate-sensitive
  • Stress reduction, exercise, anddietaryguidelines that will promote dramatic weight loss, as well as increased energy and optimal health
  • Dozens of delicious recipes and tempting meal plans
  • Invaluable tips for low-fat and vegetarian options, dining out, eating alone, entertaining, vacations, and family celebrations
By following their simple regimen, you'll reap the outstanding rewards of reduced cravings and weight, along with increased energy and health.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The authors of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet (1993) and Healthy for Life (1995) aim the latest volume in their approach to carbohydrate addiction at maturing Americans. Professors at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, the Hellers reiterate their claims that excess insulin causes some people to crave carbohydrates, creating an unstoppable cycle of cravings and weight gain. Noting that metabolisms slow down as individuals age, the Hellers again tell personal stories of learning how to manage their carbohydrate intake and their weight. They present their Basic Plan, which is based on craving-reducing proteins and vegetables and allows "Reward Meals" that include reasonable portions of carbohydrates. Nine "Options" include such tactics as adding chromium, exercising, or cutting out MSG (which triggers carbo cravings). The Hellers also link excess insulin to such age-related diseases as high blood pressure, heart disease and adult-onset diabetes. Accompanying recipes and menus, which allow much more fat than typical low-fat/high-carb plans, may attract new readers. To maturing Heller fans, much of the text will seem familiar. (Jan.)
Library Journal
The Hellers have written a sequel to their popular The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet (LJ 5/15/91), which argued that the best way to lose weight lay in reducing carbohydrates rather than fats. This new work is designed specifically for people between the ages of 40 and 60, but, unfortunately, it covers the same diet program as the first book, only with different personal success stories. The first three sections contain a description of the carbohydrate addict, "the basic plan," "options" to help in further weight reduction, and tips on eating out. Yet the food pyramid is never discussed, and skipping a meal is encouraged. Menus and recipes are presented in the fourth section, and a lengthy bibliography is included. Purchase only where this writing duo is in demand. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/1/96.]-Connie Weaver, Bosler Free Lib., Carlisle, Pa.

    Finally a diet that works!

I actually just read the 1st edition, not the Lifespan Program. I started Oct 2003 I have lost 10 lbs. Only about a half pound a week, but I'm okay with that, I am also working out 3-4 days a week, just 30 min of cardio and some stretching. I don't feel deprived. I don't need to prepare any fancy meals for myself. I can eat dinner (Reward Meal) with my family and even have dessert. Simple enough for busy people on the go. Easy to eat out on or travel. You will love this diet!!!!

I haven't done this for long, but...

...this is already the best 'diet' I've ever been on. I am a connoisseur of food, and what I've hated the most about other diets I've been on is that I either have to eat MUCH less of the foods I love, or I can eat lots of food that tastes bad. I did Weight Watchers and lost 20 lbs, but I couldn't keep it off because the diet was so restrictive. If I wanted to eat a cheeseburger (and everybody does every once in a while!), I had to save 'points'--or, calories, for the non-Weight-Watched readers--for that one meal, which left me starving for the rest of the day. Also, I didn't eat veggies hardly at all on Weight Watchers because I didn't want to eat them plain--with the C.A.D., I eat them (it's required!) with every meal, and I'm not sad about it, either, because I fix the veggies the way I like them. I make broccoli with cheese, I make asparagus with hollandaise sauce, I make green beans with lots of butter--and it's all okay. I have already lost two pounds (it's the second day). This diet probably doesn't work for absolutely everyone, but it seems to work well for most people, especially those of us who get that stomach-churning drive to consume as many carbs as we can at one sitting. That stomach-churning drive has already ceased, something I never thought possible. Try it! P.S. Some people say consuming fat is bad for you, but just take a fat-free food item and compare the list of ingredients to a food that hasn't been altered much by man (example, compare butter to low-fat or even full-fat margarine). A handful of ingredients with names you recognize (cream, eggs, ect) sure sounds a lot healthier than a list as long as your arm of stuff you KNOW isn't found naturally in anything. Just some 'food for thought.'

    The God Sent Book

I'd been trying everything that had diet on it and nothing helped me. I was watching the Oprah show and the 2 authors of this book was on it.It was if God had guided me to watch this program.I started this program without any hestitation and immediately I began to see results. I encourage anyone who has tried everything else to trust this book because if I can overcome my eating habits, anyone on the face of this earth can.

This book has changed my life!!

This book has allowed me for the first time in my 40 years to go through the day without wondering, 'When can I eat again? Has enough time passed since I last ate that I can eat without feeling out of control?' I saw this book in the bookstore and the title caught my attention. After the 2nd day on the program, I no longer had any food cravings, which when you weigh 300 pounds, has always been an impossibility. I have been on the program for one month and I am a different person, for the 1st time in my life, I am in control. I have lost so much weight so many times throughout the years, sometimes 180 pounds at a time but the pounds have always come back because every waking moment has always been spent on what I'm eating and never feeling in control. The book made so much sense that I had to try it. I'm even eating less food now because I'm just not hungy. I only eat 2 meals a day now. I always had to have breakfast before. Now I only eat when it's 'necessary,' not because I'm feeling low blood sugar symptoms or because of cravings when I just ate a good meal 2 hours before. If anyone out there has been battling food or the way they feel they deal with food, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!! I have already passed my book onto my supervisor,(this was after she DEMANDED to know what I was doing because she can already see the weight loss and the amazing increase in my energy level) and I just purchased another copy this weekend to give as a gift to a friend. DON'T WAIT TOO LONG, YOUR LIFE IS PASSING BY EVERY DAY YOU DELAY PICKING UP THIS LIFE SAVER!!! MY NEVER ENDING GRATITUDE TO THE AUTHORS OF THIS BOOK. What a great way to start my decade in the 40's.

    FINALLY

I've done it all - and finally something works. This simple to follow diet has changed my life. I've lost 30 pounds in 4 months and can now go on vacation without any weight gain when I get back. I'm not deprived, and it's become a way of life. I know a lot of people who have followed the Atkins diet and lost weight only to find that they gain it right back and also get VERY sick to their stomach whenever they eat carbs. This book's approach makes sense - don't eliminate them, just plan for them and balance them out. I highly recommend this for anyone who's tried it all and failed.

No cravings, no hunger and losing weight

I am following this plan and losing an average of a pound a week. I'm never hungry and sometimes I dont even feel like eating. I used to feel like I could always eat and never feel satisfied. Im not a fad dieter and have always tried to handle my weight with the traditional calorie watching, low fat diet with the results be terrible headaches. Im now losing weight, eating better than ever and feeling great.

The LAST diet you will ever need!!!!

I began my low-carb 'journey' at the end of January, 2000. As of May, I am down almost 50 pounds and loving this diet...if that's what you want to call it! If you're unsure if this diet is for real, I challenge ANYONE to faithfully follow it for 30 days. If after that time you haven't lost weight, feel wonderful and energetic, sleep better and feel in complete control, then shame on me for recommending this. I can tell you that for me, my blood pressure is down, my cholestrol is down, chronic edema has all but disappeared and I don't tire like I used to. I think it will work for anyone that truly wants to lose their weight and be healthy. Good Luck!!

    Food for Thought (pun intended)

The Heller and Atkins programs may differ in the details, but they break ground in nutritional theory. For so many years, we have assumed that dietary fat is *the* enemy. Thanks to my experiences and that of my father, I can testify to the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets. My father, who had a problem with high blood pressure and cholesterol, was able to significantly lower both! If you are having weight problems and traditional low-fat diets haven't helped, check with your doctor and read both the Heller and Atkins books and try one of those programs. You may be pleasantly surprised!

    THIS WORKS!

My son tried this diet about 5 years ago. He lost 30 pounds, and has kept it off. I picked up his copy of the book & started the diet in November of '99. I have lost 12 pounds to date. I love this! I get to eat, and I never feel deprived. I make sure that I eat from the 4 food groups, and I feel better. It is now a lifestyle for me & my husband, who by the way has lost almost 20 pounds. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

How to change a menu and make a million

I must say to begin with that I did not complete reading the book as I felt after a few chapters it was only a takeoff on other peoples ideas and the only new information was the one 'comfort meal' daily, which in my experience with this type of diet came about naturally. Even though I did not eat 'comfort foods' on a daily basis within one hour time span, I found that at least once a week or more I could slip in a few carbs now and then and still continue to lose weight. I think that these authors were very fortunate to appear on the 'Opra Show' and gain the same publicity as the cookbook published by Opra's personal cook, which I cannot name at the moment as I found that of little value also, and gave it away to some other overweight Opra fan.,, The new book is only a takeoff on the old Dr. Aitkens diet which I used as a guideline and found to be helpful. Although I still ate what vegtables and fruits I wanted, only cut out sweets, potatoes, bread and pasta, , I found the weight to go rather quickly and the cravings diminished greatly.I could satisfy my need for 'comfort food' now and then and after I lost the initial 30 lbs I was looking to lose, I could slowly reintroduce the carbs and have no problem with excessive weight gain. Like any other diet of this kind you must watch the scale and if you gain back a few lbs. return to the diet for a few days. By this time you have pretty much established a lifestyle for eating and are not depriving your body of the needed carbs, which to me is the same as a comfort meal each day, just worded and transformed into a new idea with the same twist. Go Opra, your making a lot of people wealthy, wish I could get you to publish me. All in all, I guess I wish I could take a book that has already been published and well established, make a few changes and get it advertised on the Opra Show - shame on you Opra, sending us all out to spend our money on an old idea that's been turned inside out and upside down to fool us into thinking there is a new miracle out there.
