Overview

The book provides comprehensive coverage of innovations in the management of capsula-confined and metastatic endocrine-responsive and endocrine-unresponsive prostate cancer. Besides detailed chapters on the entire range of treatment options, there are background chapters on the epidemiology, development, and natural history of the untreated disease. The controversial issue of the value of prostate-specific antigen as a screening tool is also fully discussed. All chapters have been written by internationally recognized experts in their fields.
This volume is an authoritative review of treatment concepts that will appeal to all concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of carcinoma of the prostate.

Robert A. Stephenson
This book attempts to review the state of currently available knowledge concerning prostate cancer and includes sections on epidemiology, genetics, natural history, detection and screening, and therapeutic options. The purpose is to present both current understanding and the persisting controversy regarding the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. Although this is an important objective, it is too difficult to achieve given the persistently incomplete data set in prostate cancer. However, in large measure the authors' objectives are well met given the reality of current knowledge. This book is aimed primarily at clinicians and is a suitable source for students, residents, and practitioners, although it will be of little use for basic scientists and epidemiologists. The authors are in general credible authorities within the field of prostate cancer. The illustrations are of good quality and appropriate. References are quite current and uniformly pertinent to the subject at hand. The table of contents and index is adequate. However, the major topic of conformal radiation therapy is completely missing from the index. The overall structure of the book is well conceived, organized, and laid out. I am particularly impressed by the very clear heading sections and a mini table of contents on the first page of each chapter with pages for each subsection. This is quite laudable. One improvement in the design of the book would be to include a glossary of abbreviations at the front of each chapter. This is an excellent text that covers most of the relevant issues pertaining to the natural history, diagnosis, and treatment of carcinoma of the prostate. The book is well organized andwell written. It will prove useful to nonexpert physicians with an interest in this disease. The title of this book uses the phrase innovations in management. This is a poor choice of wording; much as the book is not a text regarding innovations in prostate cancer management, but is rather a review of standard management strategies and their results. Innovative aspects of management are addressed in perhaps appropriate but cursory fashion.
