Editorial Reviews

Marie A. Wadas
The fourth edition of this book begins with chapters reviewing the dosage, mechanism of action, clinical indications, adverse effects, and interactions of commonly used cardiac drugs. The latter chapters review recent literature and give advice in the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, endocarditis, and hyperlipidemias. The purpose is to provide physicians with information that will allow them to choose the best drug for a given clinical situation. These are worthy objectives, and the author met his objectives. This book is suitable for medical students, medical residents, family physicians, internists, cardiologists, nurses, and all other practitioners involved with the care of cardiac patients. The author is a credible authority in the subject matter of the book. This book contains an adequate number of charts and algorithms. The references are up-to-date and pertinent. The unique features of this book make it user-friendly. The appendix provides charts listing doses of drugs frequently used in coronary care units. The inside front cover lists cardiac arrest drugs and their recommended doses. The inside back cover provides algorithms for the management of AV nodal reentrant tachycardia and sustained ventricular tachycardia. The text uses bold print throughout the chapters for quick retrieval of vital information and a second color for the chapter titles and drug names. This book is highly recommended as an up-to-date guide for the management of cardiac problems with various cardiac drugs. This revised edition has expanded the chapters on the management of hypertension, angina, acute myocardialinfarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, hyperlipidemia, and thrombolytics. It also contains a new chapter on drug interactions with other cardiac drugs and noncardiac drugs.
New edition of a handbook on modern therapeutics in patients with every type of cardiovascular disease. Khan (cardiologist, The Ottowa Hospital, and professor of medicine, U. of Ottawa) has updated drug information to include beta blockers, angiotensin 11 receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors, anti-platelet agents and statins, management of hypertension, a review of the controversy surrounding digoxin, and an analysis of calcium antagonists. Also included are drug tables indicating how a drug is supplied and its dosage, followed by advice as to efficacy, comparison with other drugs, indications, adverse side effects and interactions. Contains a global table of generic drugs available worldwide. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (

"This publication focuses on cardiac pharmacotherapy. The intended audience for this text includes cardiologists, internists, and medical residents. The author’s intent is to help physicians understand the pharmacotherapy of various diseases and the differences within cardiovascular drug classes that impact drug selection. … The references … are reasonably updated and predominantly use tertiary sources. … has many useful observations and more drug information than most physician-written books. … This is an interesting book that provides decent clinical and clinical trial observations … ."
