From The CriticsReviewer: Michael Bates, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is an excellent and much-needed follow-up to a 1997 book on operative techniques in cardiac surgery by two authorities in the field. The book is beautifully illustrated and covers the entire breadth of cardiac surgery.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive descriptions and illustrations of nearly all operations performed in cardiac surgical practice. This is an excellent companion to other books in the field, providing detailed and practical information on the conduct of almost all cardiac operations.
Audience: Although directed at practicing surgeons, the book has much wider appeal. It is an excellent choice for residents, fellows, and nonphysician practitioners. Both authors are highly respected practitioners in the field.
Features: The book addresses all aspects of current cardiac surgical practice and spans congenital to adult procedures, including transplantation. It offers excellent photos and beautiful color illustrations detailing all aspects of these complex procedures. These images are accompanied by clear and concise text explanations of the procedural steps. The book is particularly strong in the area of aortic surgery. The areas of minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery are not covered, although transcatheter aortic valve replacement is described. While it is not an exhaustive book in areas such as valve repair or congenital surgery, it does offer very good sections on many of these complex techniques.
Assessment: This is an excellent second edition on the broad and complex area of cardiac surgery. It covers most of the latest advances in the field and is a great companion to current textbooks and an excellent resource for practicing surgeons, trainees, and nonphysician providers. The illustrations are masterful and offer a truly insightful explanation of these very complex operations. While it is not intended to be an exhaustive resource on all topics, such as valve repair, it does cover almost all areas outside of minimally invasive and robotic surgery and is a truly beautiful and informative book on the state of the art of cardiac surgery.
