Reviewer: Ralph J. Damiano, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is an excellent book written for the junior surgeon embarking on a career in cardiac surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to help junior cardiac surgeons correctly diagnose and manage the diseases encountered in cardiac surgery, a worthy goal. The book did a very good job of meeting this objective.
Audience: According to the author, this book is written for the junior cardiac surgeon (or fellow), or allied health professional who works in that field. According to my judgment, this book meets that objective. The authors are credible authorities on the subject matter.
Features: This book covers all of the major subjects of cardiac surgery, including anatomy, pathology, imaging, and procedures (from major surgeries and minor interventions). There is also a section on CTICU management. This book covers the basics very well, and is a good introduction to the field of cardiac surgery. The sections on endoscopy and minimal access surgery are helpful in the evolving field of minimally invasive surgery. However, one shortcoming of the book is the paucity of information on newer procedures such as ventricular assist devices and atrial fibrillation surgery.
Assessment: This book is a high-quality, valuable book for the junior surgeon/fellow who is beginning a career in cardiac surgery. Allied health professionals would also find this a useful reference for almost any aspect of cardiac surgery. This compares favorably to other handbooks that are available. The compact size makes it more useful than other, larger handbooks. More data on newer procedures would be helpful (e.g. ventricular assist devices and atrial fibrillation surgery).
