Doody ReviewsReviewer: Elaine C Hannigan, RN, MSN (Purdue University School of Nursing)
Description: Using colorful pictures, this book provides a visual summary of cardiac anatomy, cardiovascular disorders, cardiac care, EKG interpretation, and hemodynamic monitoring.
Purpose: Through the use visual examples, the book strives to build practitioner confidence in analysis and interpretation of cardiovascular conditions. The book is needed by individuals who learn best by viewing pictures and graphs to illustrate complex points.
Audience: It could be useful not only for novice learners, but also for nurses who wish a review of concepts related to the care of the patient with cardiovascular conditions. Reviewing concepts outlined in the book could be especially useful prior to sitting for an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification course.
Features: Information is presented in a very easy to read format. Concepts are summarized in one to two pages. The book's most unique features are the colorful illustrations and pictures. For example, the bolus thermodilution method of measuring the cardiac output is explained with one picture which shows injection of solution into the PA catheter, the resultant wave form seen on the cardiac monitor, and a safety reminder that the procedure should take no more than four seconds to complete. For a busy nurse, a one-page summary is very useful. The primary limitation of this format is that it cannot describe concepts in depth, nor can it explain the pathophysiology of the conditions being illustrated. Nurses wishing a more complete explanation would need to seek out another source.
Assessment: This is a very useful resource for beginning practitioners or practicing nurses wishing a quick review. The format could be especially helpful for visual learners. Like other books in the Incredibly Visual series, this book explains complex concepts in an easy to understand format. The Incredibly Visual books should be used in conjunction with books in the Incredibly Easy series that explain cardiovascular pathophysiology in more depth.
