Purpose: The purpose is to provide medical students the core information and concepts necessary to develop a firm understanding of how the intact cardiovascular system operates. This review of cardiovascular physiology clarifies the role of physiologic mechanisms in normal and pathologic states providing a link to diagnosis and treatment. The book successfully clarifies the basic concepts of cardiovascular physiology to not only prepare students for the USMLE board examination, but to aid in their subsequent study of cardiovascular disease.
Audience: The author targets medical students with an accessible approach to complex cardiovascular concepts. Additionally, each well referenced chapter concludes with study questions and detailed answers to aid in their board preparation. The book also serves as an excellent refresher course for the busy practitioner.
Features: This book provides an overview of the cardiovascular system, focusing on normal and pathologic physiologic mechanisms. This edition adds new information including cellular processes, electrophysiology, and hemodynamics. At the conclusion of each chapter are board review style questions and answers as well as excellent references. The appendix adds a quick reference for key cardiovascular variables covered in the text. The board review style of the book clearly prevents it from being an exhaustive review, but it succeeds in its intention to be a clear, concise overview of cardiovascular physiology.
Assessment: The book succeeds in offering a clear, concise review of cardiovascular physiology. Students preparing for the USMLE as well as busy practitioners seeking a refresher course will benefit. The sixth edition offers updated information and references.
