Gr 1-3The Mystery of the Pirate Ghost is a below average mystery in which Otto and Uncle Tooth, two green lizard-like animals, capture a ``ghost'' who has been plaguing Boogle Bay . Hayes' illustrations show anthropomorphic creatures in a seaside village with nautical decor. The Care Bears' Party Cookbook is a collection of easy recipes for snacks and desserts that can be assembled without using a stove. It contains the usual cautions about safety and cleanliness while the recipes and illustrations are, like the Care Bears themselves, a trifle sweet but innocuous. In the most entertaining and amusing of the three, Deputy Dan, a Western version of ``Amelia Bedelia,'' follows the sheriff's instructions literally as he finds and arrests the Scrambled Egg Gang. Raglin's colored cartoon-style drawings reinforce Rosenbloom's corny humor. This series seems to be modeled on the ``I Can Read'' series and other books for beginning readers but is inferior to the best of those other books.
