VOYA - Sarah Sogigian
Career books for teens are often outdated not long after publication. Rosen kept this in mind with its Essential Careers series, which focuses on "recession-proof" careers, including physical therapist, hairstylist, auto mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, police officer, and teacher. What will make this series popular with readers is its high-interest/low-reading-level writing, with lots of pictures and sidebars highlighting people and trends in the profession. The content is current and includes chapters on introductions to the career, education, starting your career, and the future of the profession. Readers will also enjoy reading about pioneers in each field, looking at sample questions from certification exams, and the extensive list of resources. "For More Information" provides a list of associations, schools, and foundations dedicated to the people who work in the profession. A glossary and index complete the resources in each book. This reviewer especially liked reading about the future of each profession and the clear steps outlined for finding out more about a career. The series emphasizes that traditional skills like math and basic computer knowledge are important to excel in each career. The books also feature interview skills and proper attire—something everyone can benefit from, no matter their career. The only criticism this reviewer has is that she hopes Rosen plans to expand the series to include less traditional careers, perhaps some in the medical and technical fields. The Essential Careers series is a welcome addition to all library collections. Reviewer: Sarah Sogigian
