I enjoyed reading this manga. It was funny and romantic.

Ozaki works as an entry level project planner for company which rewards its employees with advancement through different levels of “Career Gates”. The highest level is the gold career gate. Like most other employees, Ozaki dreams of advancing through this career gate along with his co-worker, Shinoda, with whom had fallen in love. However, is Shinoda truly who he claims to be? Unbeknownst to Ozaki, he is about to become a pawn in vicious struggles for powers among the leaders behind the closed golden career gate. Can Ozaki survive their nasty maneuvers to undermine his career aspirations? Will he be able to keep his bid to stay beside his beloved Shinoda?

I must confess that reading “Career Gate” is a guilty pleasure for me. There is plenty of smut in this book to make it a highly entertaining read. I have always been partial to yaoi stories involving men in suits and Syuko Nishimura portrays them beautifully. I like the way Nishimura build and draw the characters of her semes here – they are always so gorgeous, masculine, indomitable and heroic when it comes to protecting their uke. I do find Ozaki, the uke, very frustrating at times because he is too insecure and quick to jump to the conclusions that he must sacrifice his body for the benefit of his beloved. He either has so little trust and faith in his seme or he might just have dormant slutty tendencies beneath that plain veneer that he’d happily flaunt when there occasion arises? Such sharp contrasts between the seme and uke do make some of the sex scenes very hot and memorable (i.e. on the huge office mahagony desk and in the bathroom during office party).

I would recommend this manga for any yaoi fan girls who are looking for that occasional brain candy – a stress relieving read that has plenty of racy smut among exquisitely drawn men. The localization work by the DMG’s Purple Prose Killers group is excellent as well. The translation and editing are good – I have no problem following the story lines even though Nishimura created too many supporting side characters here to keep track of. The type-setter rises to the challenge of choosing the suitable size fonts for digital viewing and translated SFX style that meshes nicely with the originals.
