Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Many of the more than nine million women business owners today have succeeded, according to Moore, because they learned how to manage their careers early, even before they started their own businesses. Using examples of businesses that have received national acclaim from the media and other organizations (such as the A.D. Morgan construction company, Advanced Tissues Sciences and Suzy's Zoo greeting cards), Moore reveals that these women have rarely stayed in one linear career path within a corporation, and that they are often closet inventors and risk takers. An entrepreneur professor at the Citadel, Moore provides a self-assessment quiz that allows would-be business owners to evaluate themselves on the same terms to see whether or not they're ready to start their own companies. She explains how entrepreneurs need to maximize their skills, particularly in managing people and negotiating, offering helpful negotiating strategies and a checklist of objectives. A key step in the negotiating process, according to Moore, is to see the situation from the other person's point of view after establishing one's own position. While her book offers a compelling look at the personalities of entrepreneurs, the book includes a haphazard mix of anecdotes and analysis that make it less helpful for readers looking for hands-on practical advice. Moore draws lessons from women who have broken away from constraints of corporate life to seek fulfillment in business or in their own way. She describes strategies for success, potential pitfalls, portable skills and knowledge, meaningful work, on-the-job learning, developing multiple networks, and personal responsibility. She also describes women who overlap home and family in a firm they jointly operate. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
ForeWord Magazine
"Women-owned businesses have doubled in the last twelve years to more than 9.1 million, 38 percent of all firms in the United States...Women owners generate $3.6 trillion in sales yearly."

Careerpreneurs is for and about women who take control of their own careers and explore the business world with newfound individualism. Over 100 women entrepreneurs who have been recognized for their achievements are profiled in this book. They share their success stories and candidly discuss their motivations for choosing business ownership. One woman who founded a subsidiary of a large biochemical company and grew sales from $200,000 to $4 million in four years realized she probably had what it would take to successfully run her own company.

Another left the management ranks of a major clothing manufacturer to start her own sportswear company, earning more than a million dollars the first year.

The book discusses various reasons women seek entrepreneurial careers, such as opportunities for more challenge, higher salaries, and freedom from corporate glass ceilings, and points out that increasing numbers of women are leaving corporate jobs to start their own businesses. It illustrates how women have leveraged their existing skills into new business opportunities, many drawing on experience gained from years of work in a corporate environment.

The book opens with a description of the shift in traditional "organization-based" professional employment to a more "individual-based" entrepreneurial career. The current statistics on women in the workplace presented here support the theory that the trend is moving away from continuing corporate loyalty, and suggests that savvy women today keep allof their career options open. In addition to the entrepreneurs who start their own businesses, the book also discusses intrapreneurs who create entrepreneurial environments within their organizations, as well as copreneurs, who have dual-careers.

Careerpreneurs is a good mix of career advice and testimonials, offering useful strategies, tips, and exercises to help women explore their own possibilities. What makes this book particularly interesting is that not all of the women profiled knew from the start that they would have entrepreneurial careers. This may provide the inspiration or encouragement for readers considering a change in their own careers.

From The Critics
Careerpreneurs packs in lessons from leading female entrepreneurs on how to build a career, and will provide many aspiring women with the voices and experiences of other pioneers who have left corporate life to seek fulfillment in their own business or in their own way. From networking to negotiation, this covers many different types of careers and strategies.

Voices of Experience Guide the Way

Dorothy Moore's newest book, Careerpreneurs--Lessons From Leading Women Entrepreneurs On Building A Career Without Boundaries, is important for women (and men) who want to investigate professional options. She provides readers with concrete steps for making career assessments and for strategically mapping out new avenues for professional careers, in general, and, more specifically, for entrepreneurial ventures. This practical approach includes 'paper and pencil' exercises for gaining personal insights into self-motivation as well as interrogative guidelines for starting a new venture. Moore's work is framed by the voices of experience - women entrepreneurs themselves. Their candor is extremely valuable. Though I disagree with Moore's restricting the concept of entrepreneurship to those who 'focus on a new product or idea...' (p. 176), the value of the content of this book deserves to be heralded.

    Fantastic Career Guidance

'A must-read for women in transition.and who isn't? I wish I'd had this book years ago when I was transitioning from social work to business education; and yet, I find it extremely helpful as I move now, twenty years later, from an academic environment into homebased business ownership. Dorothy Perrin Moore has interviewed hundreds of women and discovered the multitudinous ways women build careers and move through the various stages of their work lives. Excellent and encouraging examples! If you're not sure what you want to do in your work life, there are a gazillion ideas in this book! Well written and researched, Moore validates the opportunities women have today to create careers without boundaries.'
