Careers in Coaching

by Jeanne M. Nagle

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Although the introduction refers to this book as an "overview" and a "rough outline" of the profession, it is actually quite comprehensive. Nagle begins by describing the general roles of a coach in such capacities as evaluator, nutritionist, motivator, and financial expert. Then, she discusses some of the opportunities for experiences and careers in this field, the required training and skills, and the personal demands of coaching jobs. Issues are carefully addressed, including the lack of women and minorities in the field. Related careers like physical educator, scout, and general manager are offered as options to those specifically in coaching. Chapters on career decisions and job seeking round out the presentation. There are no photos or other illustrations. The writing style is detailed yet easy to follow. Preparing for a Career in Sports (Ferguson, 1998) and Shelly Field's Career Opportunities in the Sports Industry (Facts On File, 1998) have helpful sections on coaching; this book expands on that information.-Diane P.
