Gr 5-9-Both titles present considerable history and career information, but allot too much space to the events of 9/11, describing the role of each group in response to that emergency. The history and the purpose of both branches of the military are adequately presented, but there are too many assumptions and misstatements to justify these as quality titles. Most of the color photography is interesting, but it is often poorly matched to the text, e.g., in Roza's discussions of 9/11, the accompanying photos are of a plane and its crew returning from investigating a downed Egyptian airliner 60 miles off shore and a cutter guarding a ship in a Saudi Arabian port during Desert Storm. One sentence erroneously states that the U.S. "purchased the state of Alaska." National Guard discusses the HH-60 helicopter and the HC-130 aircraft. The photo on that page is of F-16 Fighting Falcons. The War Department, a rather dated term, is mentioned, but no reference is made to its successor, the Department of Defense. Adding to the confusion is a statement that the National Guard has created two aerospace rescue and recovery groups. The first sentence of the next paragraph refers to three such groups.
