Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
The largest branch of the American armed services is the U.S. Army. With well over one million active-duty soldiers, and millions more in the Army reserve and National Guard units, the American army remains a formidable and expansive force. Here, in this illustrated chapter of the "Military Service" series, readers are afforded a quick look at the career opportunities available via this military employer. Like other books in this series, this particular publication features content aimed at answering questions a young recruit might have prior to enlistment. Concise chapters dealing with the history of the army, occupations in service, training, chain of command, salary and benefits, and educational advancement all are structured to inform a potential soldier. A small inserted section addressing women in the army is also included. Throughout the narrative, intermittent photo insertions spotlight men and women serving in typical military occupations. A small bibliography section includes print and online reference points for youngsters seeking out additional information. Some content in this book is repetitive in terms of other titles in the series and probably could have been edited more carefully. Despite this fact, this is a potentially valuable career reference work for a youngster with an interest in service in the army. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
