Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
When one thinks of the Marine Corps images of gung-ho teamwork, unremitting effort, and a level of training that is almost unthinkable come to mind. Organized in the 18th century, the U.S. Marine Corps remains the largest elite force in the American armed services. Originally trained for dangerous shipboard defense, the Marine Corps has evolved into a force capable of grand ground assaults, amphibious landings, and aggressive action of a nearly incomparable nature. In this illustrated chapter in the "Military Service" series readers are given a glimpse at what a career in the Marine Corps might be like. The text is arranged in a manner similar to other books in the series and designed to touch on common recruitment themes. Readers encounter chapters dealing with the Marine Corps' history, occupational opportunities, advancement, benefits, and promotion. Illustrations are geared toward providing a snapshot look at common work duties. A small section is devoted to women in the Marine Corps. At the book's conclusion, additional print and online reference information is provided. As is the case with other books in this series, some content is redundant and could either have been re-written rather than simply being lifted from book to book. Still, this book is a valuable reference tool for a youngster with a potential interest in volunteering for a military career. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
