Like any teenage girl, Angel has several items on her wish list. Foremost among those is that she had never discovered her estranged father, "Lou," is actually Lucifer himself. Second would be that the powers she inherited from him would stop misfiring quite so spectacularly—like making her shirt disappear in school. Lou has promised to clean up his act and teach Angel to control her magic, but when she catches him stealing yet another soul, Angel resolves to go it alone. Her first mission is to figure out how to stop the popular crowd from tormenting her giant but meek friend Max. Together with her best friend, Gabi, Angel hatches a plan to grant a wish that will make Max popular. However, since they cannot tell Max about Angel's powers, Gabi must be the one to make the wish. And since Angel has never done this before, she accidentally grants Gabi every single wish she makes from that point on. The more Angel tries to fix things, the worse they get. Her only option is one last spell that pits her and Gabi's friendship against Gabi's newfound love of having everything she ever wanted. Now, the only question is, which will Gabi choose? Petroff creates a likeable pair in punk/nerd Angel and goody-two-shoes Gabi. Especially refreshing is the girls' reversal of roles: whereas most best friend-types in this genre are forgettable plot devices, here protagonist Angel suddenly discovers what it feels like to be the powerless one. Lucifer is more silly than dastardly, and magical theory becomes somewhat muddled—it appears Angel can reverse some of Gabi's wishes, but not others—but neither is likely to turn off younger audiences to this fast, enjoyable read with a heroine as spunky as her fire-engine red hair.
