Overview

The Untold Story of the First American Revolution

Barbados, 1648. The lush and deadly Caribbean paradise, domain of rebels and freeholders, of brigands, bawds and buccaneers. Where the flames of revolution exploded a full 130 years before engulfing the American mainland. And where a dark, enslaved race secretly practiced the mysterious rites of a distant continent while daring to whisper the forbidden word... "Freedom."
This is the sweeping tale of Hugh Winston, lusty, swashbuckling captain of The Defiance, and the lovely, tempestuous firebrand Katherine Bedford; the two trapped in a bloody pitched battle against the overwhelming forces of British tyranny. A story of love and betrayal, of slavery, war, piracy in the exotic land that gave birth to the fiery American ideal of "Liberty or Death."

From the splendor of Barbados, to the rain forests of Tortuga, to the battle-scarred Jamaican coast, a magnificent novel of a time, a place, and a people you will never forget.

    Good Stuff!!

When I downloaded this book, it was the entire book (421 pages). Character building was well done and the storyline was kinda different, but interesting for a history buff like me. It deals with the English Civil War from the perspective of the tobacco/sugarcane plantations in Barbados. My only complaint is that the font size changes throughout the book. For example, on one page, the font goes from very large, to extra small, then to medium, then back to very large.

Difficult reading with constantly changing font

This book bored me to tears! This is the best treatment for insomnia since Ambien.

I'm sure it is excellent & full of history but it was so poorly written I couldn't do it.

The font changes were horrible and made the attempt to plod through it not worth the effort. That was probably the final blow to this bilious pile of words.

    Don't waste your time.

Highly recommend / a must read

Excellent historical fiction, author did a lot of research for this book. Very well written and a usual great Thomas Hoover book. The days of early Americas colonization and the buccaneers comes to life and gives great insight into how life was lived in the Caribbean prior to the American Revolution.

I'm a fan of good historical-fiction; this was a "good" one!

Although "American history is my very favorite era, I'd never heard of this earlier period. This book was effective in relating these important historical aspects in an exciting and clear manner. A good read and actually, beyond my expectations.

    Not cool

So not feeling this book right now. I was expecting two separate stories and the second book does not start with chapter one. The second book starts with chapter eight! So deleting this book right now. Im glad it was free.

    Different...

My husband LOVED this book...I'm struggling. I am loving the culture and exposure to the early settlement struggles in the Caribbean. Some of the characters are very likable and fun. I wish the story moved a bit faster. However, like I said, my husband devoured it and thought it was a great book.

    TMI

There is a great story buried in this wordy book! The author delved into useless drivel instead of developing the characters and the story around historical events. Every time it got interesting it nose dived into repetitious nonsense. Edit this book!

    Great book

I thought it was a great well written based on some factual happenings. Of course the author took liberal license with the characters. A full sized book.
