Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lulu Delacre
Carlos and Gloria live in neighboring adobe homes in the Espanola Valley in New Mexico. They've been best friends since they can remember. As Carlos grows older, his feelings toward his friend start to change and now he likes to show off. Catching a skunk seems like a good way to do that. He's heard of how to catch one. On an outing with Gloria the boy attempts the feat and he gets sprayed. Smelly and humiliated he tries to get rid of the offensive odor, first by secretly bathing in the river, and then by soaking at home in a tomato juice bath. However, in his effort to conceal what has happened, he forgets to clean his only shoes. Sunday comes and inadvertently, he sits at church next to an air vent. Alas, breathing gets so uncomfortable that the priest dismisses the congregation. All ends well when Carlos' father offers to buy a new pair of shoes. A tender story sprinkled with funny moments that will delight young readers who might want to look for the two previous Carlos adventures in the series. Included at the end is a recipe for Carlos' favorite tomato salsa. The translation reflects the Spanish spoken in the American Southwest region.
