CriticasK-Gr 3-It is St. Francis of Assisi's Day and the blessing of animals is about to begin, but Rosalia's pet chicken, Blanca, is nowhere to be found. Worried that if Blanca is not blessed she will not be protected during the coming year, Rosalia grabs one of the hen's feathers and gets in line along with other townspeople to await the blessing. Despite her worries about what Padre Santiago will think and the mockery of friends and neighbors, Rosalia perseveres and gets the blessing for her pet. All ends well when Blanca reappears at the end of the day, surrounded by a flock of newborn chicks. Rosalia's assertiveness is refreshing and inspiring. Suzan's illustrations are a treat, using predominantly brown and beige hues to set the mood of the Southwest pueblo where the story takes place. His stylized drawings add whimsy and playfulness to this sweet tale. An author's note providing historical background on St. Francis of Assisi's Day celebrations completes the book. Highly recommended for public and school library picture story collections.
