K-Gr 3-It is St. Francis of Assisi's Day and the blessing of animals is about to begin, but Rosalia's pet chicken, Blanca, is nowhere to be found. Worried that if Blanca is not blessed she will not be protected during the coming year, Rosalia grabs one of the hen's feathers and gets in line along with other townspeople to await the blessing. Despite her worries about what Padre Santiago will think and the mockery of friends and neighbors, Rosalia perseveres and gets the blessing for her pet. All ends well when Blanca reappears at the end of the day, surrounded by a flock of newborn chicks. Rosalia's assertiveness is refreshing and inspiring. Suzan's illustrations are a treat, using predominantly brown and beige hues to set the mood of the Southwest pueblo where the story takes place. His stylized drawings add whimsy and playfulness to this sweet tale. An author's note providing historical background on St. Francis of Assisi's Day celebrations completes the book. Highly recommended for public and school library picture story collections.

Rosalía was all set to take her pet hen, Blanca, to the chapel on October 4th for the annual blessing but when it was time to leave, Blanca was nowhere to be found. Everyone laughed and teased Rosalía for bringing one of Blanca's feathers but she was pleased when Padre Santiago gave his blessing. In searching for Blanca upon her return home, she discovered not only her hen but a brood of baby chicks as well and she stroked them all with the blessed feather. The simple faith of a child and her love for her pet is at the heart of this warm and comforting story. Suzán's folkloric stylized illustrations on textured paper are warm and inviting and complement the text. The Mexican countryside setting is distinctly portrayed. The blessing of animals began in the 12th century and is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. Observant readers can find his portrait in Rosalía's home and the saint (holding a bird) in the illustration of a crowd of people. K-Gr 3-Flat, roughly textured illustrations create the Mexican world of a small girl who looks forward to taking her chicken to the Day of Saint Francis of Assisi celebration. On October 4 in many Latin countries, men, women, and children parade to the local church with newborn farm animals in order for them to receive a blessing of safety from disease and predators. When the big day arrives, all Rosal'a can find of her beloved Blanca is one solitary white feather. Although many make fun of her, her faith sustains her as Padre Santiago blesses the feather with instructions to rub it across the head of the lost animal when she is found. Rosal'a is eventually blessed with the return of her beloved animal, plus a handful of chirping baby chicks, each of which is blessed with Blanca's feather.
