Gr 2-4-Carlos has the perfect family-a patient mom, a supportive dad, and a doting grandma-and lots of friends, including his purring cat and his fun teacher. Into this happy and unsuspecting existence comes a big change. At first, Carlos's mother explains her pregnancy by telling him stories of his own infancy; he is temporarily appeased and looks forward to the family's impending event. The annoying reality of the baby, though, is more than he can stand, and the boy goes missing. When his desperate parents finally track him down in the nursery, Carlos is telling the baby to go away and not come back. Only another dose of parental attention can make him feel better about the sleepy interloper. Readers will relate to Carlos's insecurities and empathize with him. The author breaks the story into brief chapters, which move the action along. The humorous pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations capture the drama's emotions. This title works well as a read alone. Recommended for school and public libraries.
