Overview

From December 1971 to April 1972, Carlos Santana and several other members of Santana toured with drummer/vocalist Buddy Miles, a former member of the Electric Flag and Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys. The resulting live album contained both Santana hits ("Evil Ways") and Buddy Miles hits ("Changes"), plus a 25-minute, side-long jam titled "Free Form Funkafide Filth." It was not, perhaps, the live album Santana fans had been waiting for, but at this point in its career, the band could do no wrong. The album went into the Top Ten and sold a million copies.

Carlos and several members of the Woodstock era Santana band teamed up for a tour with Buddy Miles (most famous for being JImi Hendrix's drummer during the Band of Gypsys era). Recorded during a Diamond Head Crater Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii, the album captures much of the long free form jam style that were very popular during the 1970s. The album is about 45 minutes long with only six tracks but the last is a 25 minutes improvisational jam. Of the six tracks four are instrumentals and the other two tracks were big hits at the time, "Evil Ways" is presented here in a faster thumping version and "Them Changes" is good rendition of Miles most famous composition. There are almost no liner notes which is a bit of a minus, it would have been interesting to know about the Santana Miles tour of the time and how it came about. On the positive the album shows off Santana's guitar ability when it was in top form. Several of the tracks blend into each other so the album seems slightly short. But those interested in Santana live and do not want to sit through, or pay for, the double albums of "Lotus" or "Live at the Fillmore 1968" this is a good buy at under $10 and overall the album is pretty entertaining.
