Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Author Slavicek has written an in-depth biography on the Hispanic guitarist and songwriter Carlos Santana. Seven chapters highlight the areas of his life. An introductory chapter called "Humanitarian and Superstar" describes the night of August 30, 2004, when Santana was honored as the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Person of the Year. Chapter two chronicles Santana's musical background that came from a long line of family musicians. His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father had all played professionally. Chapter three looks at Santana's struggle to find a musical path. He formed a band and played at small parties and weddings in the San Francisco area. Then he moved from playing blues to rock music. Jimi Hendrix was a big influence on Santana's music. He then developed his own sound, combining rock and blues that had a unique Latin conga rhythm. Fame was coming his way, but there were also drug and medical problems. By early 1970, he had a Top-10 single, Evil Ways. Then in 1972, he met Deborah King at a concert. They married and had three children. There were ups and downs in the 1980s. His albums did not do very well but he made a comeback with a European tour. In 2000, Santana won eight Grammys and three Latin Grammys for Supernatural. Today, at the age of fifty-nine, Santana is enjoying the success he worked so hard to achieve. Good photographs illustrate the text. Sidebars, a chronology and time line, source notes, a bibliography, web sites, and further reading are included. 2006, Chelsea House, Ages 10 up.

Gr 6-10-Martinez is packed with statistics and play-by-play baseball action from the beginning of the athlete's American career through the 2004 and 2005 Red Sox seasons. The conversational text and sidebars are accurate and engaging, despite a few typos. Slavicek fills Santana with excellent details-music and familial histories shed light on the man's roots and focus strongly on his humanitarian efforts. In both books, color photos and sidebars add interest, and quotes from magazines, newspapers, and interviews are meticulously cited in the endnotes. Given that there are few biographies on either man, these titles will fill a void.-Kate McGowen, Topsham Public Library, ME Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
