This is a collection of stories by Prosper Merimee, of which Carmen, The Venus of Ille, and The Etruscan Vase are the best-known. They are all worth reading, Prosper Merimee is a master storyteller, and after reading this, I regret that he has written so few stories in his life. He moved to writing
history in his later life.
