Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Katie DeWald
Mrs. Parker's third grade class is busy making a map and flyer in preparation for their spring carnival. As the students are busy deciding where the skateboard ramp, games, food, and first-aid stations should be located, they learn about the parts of a map. The class gets a proofreading lesson and a big surprise when kids bring their pets to the carnival due to a mistake made in the carnival flyer. The class rebounds from the blunder by hosting a boisterous and entertaining pet parade. Mrs. Parker's students learn about the compass, key, title, symbols, and cardinal directions. Each of the terms readers encounter is included in a glossary at the end of the book. The fun, cartoonish illustrations give the characters personality and help readers to understand the content. Blackaby also includes an activity for making a school map and a section of library and web resources about maps. This green level book from the "Read-it! Readers: Social Studies" series would be an excellent supplement to an elementary unit about map skills. Reviewer: Katie DeWald
